The Crown Cycle sponsored duo fin ished with about a minute lead, earnin g $100 a pi e c e . The Padilla/Belknap team finished second overall, firs t 250. The Kallen/Garcia team would have finished t hird b ut in the frant ic battle for the lead , Garcia took the bike from Kallen and charged out of the pits before Chris could put the required bandoleer over Ruben's sho ulder. The rider's instructions warned th at riding without that bandoleer meant disqualification and so it was th at their outstanding ride wen t down the tube s. Bill Conroy and Kevin Hasten, j ust back from Baja, te amed up an d fini shed third. Their original plan was to ride Bill's 400 CZ , but when Conroy showed up in 12th on the first loop, Kevin grabbed h is personal 400 and took off to try and catch up . Even though his air shocks weren 't working righ t, he still m anaged to boun ce his way into the fifth posit ion. They ende d up th ird in sp ite of Conroy motoring in to the pits on the fifth loop with a flat tire and no gas ca p. Dale Owens and Heath Hibbard (4 00 Yam ) teamed up and rode a con sistent race to finish fourth. Brad Denham and Bob Burtsch er te amed on a 4 00 Mono to take fift h and first No vice. Greg Kammerman and Gary Rin gro se (4 00 Yam ) nearl y had a t h ird as well as fi st r Novice, but the chain bro ke on the last loo p to end yet another b rillia n t ride. II looks like Cyrus Palmer and Danny Jones 11 (40 0 Yam ) were the overall Beginner winners. With all t he lapping going on however, its hard to tell and all results herein are very unofficial. The 22-m ile course was very fast , ' with lots of sandwashes and a long fireroad to boot, The leaders were go ing around in about 26 minutes. No wonder the Beginners, starting 15 minutes af te r the first wave , were all lapped. _ Results in Results Section. t
