T he co mp uting had to be carried out to the num ber of "Ones" to determine the winner. This time, Bernie edged Marl and by two points and in th e process takes a co m ma n di ng lead in pursuit of the 19 75 ATA Ch ampionship. Joe Gu glielmelli (Ha n ) ha d a disast rous first loop o f 24 points and t hough t he was co mp le tely out of it a t that point. However, he had an ex ceptio nally good finis h with seven and five po in t loops to take third p lace . GuglielmelJi an d George Smith were o n new bikes, thus the entire Team Hon da is now aboard the new RTL 300 Pro totype. One of th e best rides in the Expert class wa s by 15 ye ar- old J e ff Fish (Ma n) wh o finis he d eig hth. J e ff was also one of th e very tire d finisher s (surv ivor s) at the second National Trials Round at Murderer 's Gulch in May - a trial many now co nsider, in retro spect , o ne of th e toughest tri als ever held in the Uni te d St at es. In th e Amateur class , Paul Will iams (Bul) edged o ut Den ni s Gilm or e (BuI) for th e second tri al in a ro w and Ray mond Sarra (Bul) came in third. Paul earned enough transfe r p o ints to make Exp ert. Greg Carter (:' Io n ) wh o has been red hot in the Novice class, cha lked up an other win by dro ppi ng a mer e 10 po ints. Sco tt Par ker (Mo n] finished second fo llowed by AI Ro per (Suz) . Altho ugh the to p No vices didn ' t dro p . man y po ints. so me of the "Begin ner " Novices had as much tro ub le o n th e loop as th ey did o n the sectio ns. One Novi ce called it q uits afte r th e first loop stat in g that he co u ld tac kle th e secti ons but the loop. in particular a long downhill. was to o much for him. The first rea l tough section fo r the Ex perts was sec tio n two wh ich had a series o f ch a llenging obstacles topped o ff with a steep roc k-faced exit. Ly nn Barn es had a particu larl y nast y spill here when he snapped a chain just as he was climbing the rock. However most of the points were dropped at sec tion 10 which was located at the bottom of the aforementioned downhill in the midst of a mini-forest with two wa ter crossings, large rocks and tight turns. The Bogwheelers succeded in lay ing out a challe nging tri al for all classes without it be ing a " bike·breaker ". The fo ur mile loop in itself was su ch a b last that some of th e hardier riders tried to " clean" the loop afte r the m eet. The Ironman, Marvi n Russell, ed ged ou t all co me rs in this post meet " tri al" by dropping only two poin ts. T he next ATA Tria l will be host ed by SCTA o n June 29 at Claude Ost ee n Park, Pomona. Spe cial incentives include a $3 entry ($5 fo r non-A'I'A ] and ice-cold wat ermel on after the meet.
