Jeff was challenged every lap by Becker but never gave an inch for the win. Jeff had a little extra going for him, his pit man was made up to look like the Wolf Man, no special reason other than Mr . Schwartz, a make-up man, digs the sport and wanted to share his talent with the fans. It did make for a lot of fun. It all started when one fan , Ho wie Wass of Bakersfield, said he wou ld add one hundred dollars to the pu rse if anyo ne wou ld ma tch it, San Val Trucking, the sponsors of SCOll Sivadge went o ne better an d added $350 if so meone wo uld to p it. Bobby Sch wa rtz , Scott Sivadge and the Bast Brothers h ad earned their way to th e Scratch Main and a chance at all the gold . All four riders hit tum one together, Bobby and Mike went down with Bobby riding up the back side of Mike, ripping his pants and exposing his behind. Mike was helped to the pits where the hole was filled with several shop rags. When he Came out for the restart there was a standing ovation for him and as he settled down on the seat, it was obvious that he was in pain and would rather be standing himself! The second start saw Steve Bast get out first with Mike right behind him, Sivadge and Schwartz swapped back and forth. But at that big checkered flag for the victory was five time California Champ, two time U.S. Speedway Champ and National Indoor Champ, Steve Bast. . Irwindale, Califo rnia Ju ne 14, 1975 1£ there were rafters, the fans would have been hanging from them at the Second Annual Speedway/Funny Car Doubleheader with nearly 7,000 folks on hand. Ironically, the o nly sp onsor in vo lved in both styles of racing, Joe Pisan o of Venolia Pistons, went home a happy winner in both. , He sponsors Jake Johnston who upset Jim Du n n in the AA /Funny Car action .an d also watched Mike Curoso' stash away the Scratch Main. Curoso began his ride with a wired victory in the first Scratch heat ove r Max Koemans. Scratch Heat winners m ade up a ' unique Match Race field in which all four faced off to take the top two for the Best of Three Final. Curoso faced Mike Konle, the second heat winner, and lost out in that one. Third he at ace Bru ce Penhall defeated fourth he at winner Bill Cody ' in the other to pl ace Konle an d Penh all in the he ads -up mat ch. It was a classic, especially with S I 00 up for each t wo-lap win. Konle won the first race whi ch was a side-by-side affai down t o th e fin ish flag. Penhall the downed t he second by a margin of five fee t. T he third ende d abru p tly whe Ko n1e ran out of fuel hal fway throu gh Pen hall gave Konle a rematch an d it co s hi m the win as Ko nle got the d rive ea rl and held it. Cur oso made amends wit h a win o ve Ko nle in the first Scratc h ' Semi. Then afte r a resta rt in the second whi ch l\l Koe man s failed to m ak e after a sp ill Cody em erged the winner over Dann Bec ker , ma kin g up the fin al.
