By Dale Brown MAMMOTH MTN.. eALlF.. ]UNE 7-8 Under the stem gaze of the snow-capped peaks, the Mammoth Motorcycle Club played host to over 500 motocrossers escapIng the urban sprawl and seeking glory at the Eighth Annual Mammoth Motocross. Going at this thi ng in b ack-asswards order, Sun day 's Pro winners were : David Williams ( 125), Dan Turner (250) and To m Rap p (Open). In the 125 action , it appeared that Tim Hoover (Yam) had everything well in hand. He dominated the first moto, passing holeshot artist David Taylor early in the going and then running away fro m the rest of the pack. From the middle of th e aforementioned pack came Williams (Hon) and Bruce McDougal (Yam) to finish second and third, well be h ind Hoover. But Hoover crashed in the second moto start and did not ride after that. Williams and McDougal both got past early leader Taylor and went at it hot an d heavy for the remainder of the moto. On the last lap, Williams had trouble getting arou nd a lapped rid er and McDougal closed to within inc hes. Williams h eld h im off for the win in the closest racing of the day. Wes Norton (Yam) put together 6-3 finishe s for third behind McDougal and ahead of Taylor. In the 250 Pro go, Jeff Little [a.k.a, The Buell ton Bulle t) led all the way in the first moto on his Husky , just ahead of Turner on a Bu!. Turner simply reversed th e order in the second round to take the overall win. Dennis Brand (Pen ) didn't let a little th ing like a derailed chain stop him from scorin g a pair of thirds to take third. Tom Rapp (Bul) was the on ly repeat winner this year. Using the smoothest lines available, Rapp won the first Open m o to with ease, keeping his distance over h ard-ch argin g Ron Bass on a Maico-forked Suzuki. In the second moto, Rapp was about fifteenth into the first turn , with Gunnar Lindstrom (Hus) leading. Rapp calm ly took a few laps to work his way into second, passed Lindstrom about halfway through and won again . Bass p lace d fourth, but ended up second overall, ahead of Rob Norgaard (Yam). Lindstrom h ad a 10-2 tally for a fifth overal l. Saturday was reserved for the Juniors and the Mam moth M.e. went ba ck to the way things used to be run . That is, they divided the Juniors into groups, le t them run two motes, took the top ten from each group and put them in a final , with the best cu mulative score winning. All three overall winners won their finals. Th e women had a race of the ir own thi s year. Janene Turton (Bul) won the first m oto easily ahead of Jan Kline (Hon) . Joana Stenersen (Hon) ran away with the second mo to, but her first moto crash kept her out of the standings. Turton took the overall win, ahead of Paulette Napoleone (Ho n) an d Cherry Stockton (BuI). Stenersen h ad an outstanding performance in one of the 125 Junior mo to s, fin ishin g third. Both she and Turton qu alified for the final, but unfortunately , both h ad problems in the final. In addition to being a great place to race. Mammoth is a fantastic p lace just to be. Even the drive up from L.A. is inspiring, with the awesome Sierra Nevadas in the distance, an d the beautiful deep blu e streams that run alongside and under the ' road. Most fo lks show up early in the week and make a nice vacation out of the whole thing. Th e Mammoth M.e. certainly had their act together.
