With some bigger races happening back East and at Mammoth. the Pro entries were light. Rich Thorwaldson (Mai). Bill Rubly (Mai). and Luke Messer (Mai) were the local 500 Pro riders. Rubly grabbed the lead out of the gate with Thorwaldson hot on his heels. About seve n lap s had gone by and Rubly crashed and left the race with a flat tire. Thorwaldson took the win with little trouble. T horwaldson and Rubly were grip-to-grip into the first sweeper of mota two and again Rubly had the lead . Not one lap completed and Rubly pulled off with the exhaust pipe dangling. Thorwaldson went into the lead and Luke Messe r (Mai) challenged the vet. The lead changed hands between ' t he two Maicos several times with Thorwaldson the winner for the day. Jeff Jennings (Bul}, to ok the lead in the 250 Pros right off and then took the chec kered with in 20 minutes. Gary Ogden (Yam ). out of Esco ndido Yamaha, brough t up the second p osition with Va l T amietti (Mai) in third . Mota two was no different except Rub ly and Jennings were side by side the entire first half of the co n test. Ogden , now in third. crashed an d Man tgomery took over third. Jennings pulled away from the field. Rubly co o led off and Montgomery placed in the top t hree. Mota two of the 125 Pros was a carbon co py of the- Smith-Croft clash a co u p le of weeks ago . Glover and Marty Moates (Han) rode the entire race like they we re on a two seated bicycle . Moates had a slight advantage with some banzai ru ns down the Grand Prix downhill. Mo ates cam e out on top with Glover second and Tessitore third. • Results in Results Section . CMC Irwindale By John Bethea IRWIND ALE, CALlF.•JUNE 6 Bill Rubly continued h is assault in the 500cc Pro class on an eve ning that marked the ret urn of Luke Messer to racin g. The question, however, was if he could make it to the second mota or not. After t aking second to jeff jennings in the King of the Hill, Bill was heading back to the infield area for the presentation when Steve Cross, who had fal len earlie r in the two-lap ra ce, ca me flyi ng off the final jump and p lowed into the broadside of Bill's Maico, shattering the expansion chamber. Luckily , Bill was able to scrounge up another and p repare his Maico before his race came u p . This particular part of the desert is ridden regularly, but se ldom raced, and proved to be interesting to all. In the first Open Expert ra ce of the d ay, Jim Sumners (Mono) was firs t to the bomb followed by Ron Wright MOn ). Behind them were Larkin Wight, and "Smo kebo mb " Gae tz Hus) Mono) . By the second la p Sumners picked up a flat, Wright b ro ke his chain and Wigh t wa s passed by t he c harging Gaetz. That's the way it stayed to the finish. Cordis Brooks (Bu l) made his retu rn to t h e desert a good o ne, winni ng t he Open Expert ho nors in the second go. Coming in for the second spo t was Ron Wright and Jim Su m ners p ulled in for a cool third. But at t he end of it all, Dick Allen sponsored "Smokebomb " Gaetz had come up from a he-h um start to take fourt h, and more points t han anyone in tha t class for the day. "Birdie" Greenberg led Benny Padilla (CZ) to the bomb on the first run out for t he 250 Experts. Moving ou t of the dust were Larry Ro esel er (H-D) and Bru ce Ogi lvie (H.D) for third and fou rth respectively . The Harle y d uo t rucked on, to ta ke the first two places in the second round with "Birdie" (Mono) finishing third. The finishing order in bo th Expert ra ces were the same wi th Ch ar lie Ham mil taking the wins, Marc' Cartwright (Pen) the seconds, and Bob Meyers (Hod) the th ird s. "Maxed " Eddy (Pen) took t ~o wins in th e 175 Expert class, topping t hat class fo r the second week in a ro w. Another rider taking two firsts today was Gary Scheid ler (Yam) in the 100 Novice class. 1 Speed m ust run in the Brecker fam ily, for t his week Todd Brecker, riding on a b rand X, took the Open Novice race wi re to wire. Brecker was followed by nameless n umbers 1083 an d 1182. In fou rth spo t o n a stock 250 Yamaha was jack Gaetz. Trudy Beck (Pe n) surprised q uite a fe w riders by finishing first gir l and seventh overall agains t t he guys in the 175 Amateur/Expert race . TItillated, I went back to the pits with her phone number. • Superbowl qualifying hot at OCIR By Don Ross IRV INE , CAL.,jUNE 5 It was an exciting night at O.C.I.R. with the largest turnout for High Sc hoo l Motocross so far th is year. The big race of the night was the 250 Expert clas h with Kevin Willis [Hus], Marston So lle nder (YZB), and Garry Faulks (Mai) all going for the two slots avai lab le in the 250 Expert class. In the first m o t a , it was Sollender all the way in first place with Faulks second and Willis third. The third place for Willis gave hi m 30 pain ts and qualified him fo r the Superb owl. Now the race was between So lle nder and Fa ulks for the re main ing slot. In the second mota, Faulks took the first and Sollender was second. A first in th e las t mota fo r Sollender would qualify him with exactly 600 po in t s. Fau lks came off the line first wit h So lle nder riding hard on h is tail. The p res sure paid off as Faulks lost it and So llender rode to an easy win and a p o siti on at the Superbowl. Also qualify ing was Tim Murphy (Han) in t he 100 Junior cla ss with a to tal of 6 10 poin ts. Saddleback High had issued a ch allenge to race against any other school. Estancia High and Huntington Beach High picked up t he challenge. Unfortunately , many of t he Saddle back ri ders had bike problems and did not show, while H untington Beach and ' Estancia came p repared with 21 and 14 rid ers respectively. Estancia has a su pe r ho t team wh ich scored 970 points to take th e wi n. Hunting ton Beach tried hard, but had to settle for second with 640 points and La Se rna was third with 470 points. , • Resu lts in Results Section.
