They omitted the footage of the tootsie getting a breast tattoo entirely . Jamborites were greeted at the fairgrounds by Louise C. White and Bill Barrett of the sponsoring Southern California Motorcycling Association and Sierra Road Riders Associations. Mr. Barrett carried a stick to which was fastened a length of c hain and a spiked steel ball. It was the only unconcealed weapon at the Jamboree ; even sheath kn ives had to be surrendered at the gate. For their five dolla rs , each e n trant got a n ifty blue, white, an d brown enamel p in , rimmed wi th golden brass, su rm oun ted by a sp re ad eagle. Weste rn Ro ad riders con side r a run as proo f enough of th ei r motorcycle p rowess and any games involving m o to rc ycle riding m ight sm ack o f com p e ti tive sport, which t hey resentfully avo id . Therefore, th e field events by the On e Big Family M.C " whic h happened on Saturday aft ern o o n , were largel y ign ored. So ciali zing an d ad m iri ng t he variety o f m achinery was t he order of the d ay, an d th e nights were capped with dancin g to the music of the Ne w Phoenix Band an d M.C. - which wa s sim p ly th e New Phoenix Band until they pla yed for a re cent ro ad run and th en bought m otorc ycles. You co uld get tattooed in the exh ibi t hall , good home co o king in the ca fe tcria or insp ec t ed by th e California Highway Patrol and re ceive a nifty blue and white sticker if your bike passed muster. The whole thing was a benefit for c hari ty, including California 's M.O.R.E. lobbyist, Russ Sanford, who W :!S there abo ard his tomat o -red Yamaha wearing w hi te-an d- blue leathe rs. Russ has his hands ful l in th e sta te capi t o l these days wi t h the new govern or 's Sierra Oub ap p oin tees filling every re creation post. Russ has take n to not we ari n g his helmet so metimes, now that the helmet-law battle seems definitely w on. He happily passed o ut M.O.R.E . bumper . stickers that say, "And on the seventh day God created motorcycles. " By any standards, the first annual U.S. Motorcycle Jamboree was a huge su cc ess. For the firs t time since September 19 3 9 , there was not a war in the whole world that we ekend. There was even a moon eclipse Saturday night. nation 's finest riders on July 20 th . Already signed are Mcrt Lawwill, Gary Scott, Gen e Romero, Rick Hocking, Dave Aldana, and Eddie Wirth. There 's even talk that Bart Markel will come ' o u t of reitrement' for this one! If anything can stir up fond memories for the afficianados of motorcycle racing at its very best, it's the Sacramento Mile. Fo r those of you who are too young to remember, the Sacramento Mile was the ultimate , ranking only slightly behind Daytona in popularity with the riders and spectators alike. When the State of California abandoned the 'Old Fairgrounds ' and moved into the new plant at Cal-Expo in 1968, the politicos put a st o p to all fonns of motor vehicle co m petitio n on the mile-trac k a t th e new facility, In st ead, th e mile-track was used excl u sively by the horsemen , and th e once-glorious Sacramen to Mile was re lega te d to the ' Old Fairgrounds', where t he big oval gave way to modem deve l op me nt followin g th e lo n g-re m em bered, fin al Sacramento Mile o f 19 70 . AIthough the ' big promoters' h ave been un able to 'crack the Cal-E xpo nut ' since 19 68 , this past year h as seen m an y chan ges in the direction and leadership of Cal-E xpo. The State Fair Advisory Bo ard and the Cal-Expo Staff have ta ken a realistic ap p roach to putting Cal-E xpo on its feet fin anciall y . To this en d, they have worked hard to bring the st at e 's horsemen and the motorsports promoters together. Un der the cap a ble guidance o f Ed Freidberg, and other Directors and Officers o f Golden Bear Raceways, which is the newly-formed trotting association at Cal-Expo, the mi d-season racing date of July 2 0 t h has been gran ted to Wildcat Productions for the running of the 1975 Sacramento Mile . Wildcat Productions, a newly-form ed group of California bu sin e s smen with long-standing motorcycling interests, will use th e Sacramento Mile to - pave the way for motorcycle racing of the futu re, with rider benefits, rider safety, and pure spec ta t o r pleasure being fo remost in mind • Jammin' at the Jamboree By C:~arles Clayton TULA R E, CALIF., MAY 25-2 6 Over 3 ,0 00 sign ups made the U.S. Motorcycle Jamboree Ame rica's biggest ro ad ride in its first year. Individual riders and fam ily clubs from as far aw ay as Illinois and Texas gat he re d at the fairgrounds and com p ar ed chestsful of tour b adges from other runs. It was an easy, breezy get- to ge th er as well as a goo d c han ce to ride thro ugh California's nearby Sequoia mountains. The full dress parade through Tulare was th e highlight o f the J am boree.
