During that second round, Whit e again had tak en the lead, but he went down so hard in the turn approaching the announcing tower that the dirt got hurt! Sustaining an injury to his foot. he was unable to continue for the remainder of the event. Ossa-m ounted Jeff Wright. in a superb effort and with a four-two score for the two m ote s, was first runner·up behind Ha rper. While Jeff Little (Hus) an d Wes Sutto n (Mo n ) finis hed closest to the fro n t-runni ng p air . With a lar ge t urnout of sidehack rigs agai n on hand for the BCA pro gram. an overall victory in t he b ig-bore division wen t to t he team of J ohn Palfreyman and J oe Gardner (Tri Wasp); wh ile Rick Lucch ese and Dennis Morgan (Yam) gained the big trophy for the lightweight class . . . If y o u can term any of those sliding dirt-slingers: "Ligh tweigh ts!" A 36-rider field of 125 Novices roared from the starting gate, with Geo~e Corc o ran (Yam ). Skeeter Marks (Ho n ) and Tim Locey (YZ) coming out on top of the pack, Following two 20-m in u te rounds; Corcoran and Marks were lo cked in a tied score ; both with a second and a first. Powder Puffs pick off Papas By Andi Gangewer ELSINORE, CAL., MAY 17 We had a very strange powder-puff class Saturday night , d ue to the fact that the en tries were not all females. There wer e four girls and two men signed up in t his class. Don Grigsby, Sr. and Jim Lipps, both age 41 tried t heir luck with the girls. Joanne Redding, 18 from Vista showed the m en how the ladies do it. J oanne won the second and th ird motos and to o k a second pla ce beh ind La Habra's Bety Welch er.in t he firs t rno to . Kandi Lipps brought in t he third. Don Gri gsby. Sr . and J im Lipps reall y put on a show fo r th e spec tato rs. Th ey rode street bi kes and tap ed hats on top of their helmets along with toilet paper streamers . Along with a lar ge group o f riders ca me a new 250 Am ateur class . A lo t o f riders wer e surprised when they found th ey were no longer classed as Novice s. Elsin ore 's own Chris Kelbel rode his Yamaha like a cham p to take first in all three moto s. Gary Atwood fro m Valinda slipped into second in motos o ne and two fo r th e second spot. The clown, 14-year·old Pau l t rae k McPherson maneuvered his Yamaha in for th e third. Congratulations to Steve Woskoski, who rode good and hard to squeeze past Charles Summers fo r the win in th e 12 5 Amateur/Expert class. Woskoski and Summers fough t it out each ra ce in front of the pack. Summers won the first moto , but took two seconds behind Woskoski in the remaining motos. Vin ce Landry . 17 fro m Vista was the firs t Amateur, so he collec te d a trophy after the races. CAL.• MAY 15 The hotshoe from Upland High, Tim Hoover (Han) was out again , doing as well th is week as he did last Thursday in the 125 Seni or class. Moto one had Hoover out fro n t. with David Williams (Hon) fro m Ru bido ux tryi ng hard to catch h im . Ramona's Steve Bauer (lIon) trailed in third. As the lap s wen t by, Hoover's lead grew bigge r and better. Williams go t the holeshot at the st art of the second race. with Hoover quickly catching up . With three laps to go , Hoover passed Williams in th e turn before the finish lin e. and a wid e lead developed between Hoover and the rest. He blew everyone in the weeds in the th ird m o t o , wi th Williams p ullin g second. Ro bert Fudge (Pen) from Uplan d lligh was the on e to wa tch for an d watch o ut for in the 25 0 Senior class, and it 100 ked as t hough the races were al l h is until the white flag lap of the final m o t o, Fudge we nt ove r the crash wall , giving up his win to Mike Slater (Mai) fro m La Sierra Academy.
