Smith and Wright
By Elaine Jones
CORONA, CAL., MAY 14
Chris Smith and Jim Wright went
at it tooth and to enail in th e 750
Expert on a fast half-mile Wednesday night and had every one
holding their breath as it went down to
the wire. Jim Wright go t the hole shot
off the line and t he usual way of things
when this happens is a win. Chris
do gged Jim th e whole way and on lap
seven sq ueezed by an d held J im o ff to
ta ke the win . Th ird pl ace Denny
Aguirr e, riding more for e xperie nce
again st th e big machines on his 35 0cc
Kaw asaki was a n ot t oo distant th ird.
Tim Bowers and Dan Ree s winners of
the Ope n Novice 11 and half-mile
respec tively had m ore than their wins in
com mo n as they each earned their
tr an sfer to Am at eur. Nee dless to say
Geo rge Erickson and V. A. Mandella
who pl ayed the bri desmaid ro le s to
these two are ove rjo yed.
Fred dy Con over wh o h as been
wowi ng t he spectators with hi s super
quick, bad to th e bone I OOcc Kawasaki
mini-cycle earned an Amateur rating
with it an d also his new 125cc
half-railer. Dylan Neihart who was
second to him o n t he half-mile also gave
a fo n d farewell to the word No vice. The
125cc Novice clas s is so packed wi th
talen t that it's hard to say who will be
to p dog, b u t among th e riders to wa tc h
sho ul d be David J en kin s, J eff Wright,
J im Sp iegle and David Calla way . Rick
Blankenship who t ravels all the way
from Palmdale looks to be Numero Un o
in the 100cc Division and Rob Selvy
shouldn't be discoun te d for a sec on d.
Well, Mike Tid well was his usual
ou tstanding self ri ding fo ur and winning
four. He's got to be a machine wrapped
up in a kid 's skin or h ave the stamin a of
a l\1isso uri mule. Mike Minning ran
seco nd to Ti d well on th e 125 cc Expert
half-mile, and 25 0cc Expe rt 11. Tun
McWhorter and Carl Whitt go t to run
sec on d to Mike on th e 25 0c c Expert
Twin hal f-mil e and 125cc Expert 11. If
to add insult to injury, Eddie Lawson
finally quit breaking bikes lo ng enougb
to win the 250cc Expert half-mile Singl e
with Minning in second . Jim Roach who
was third place finisher on the half-mile
goes, deserves co mme n t for transferring
himself from the Novice ranks.
Th e mini cycle boys are really
becoming co mpetitive with no one
domin atin g th e classes. Chris Cannon
came o ff a second in th e semi to tum
the tables on Mik e Paulson for th e 11
win. It didn 't go th e sam e way on the
hal f-mile as sp ecialist Todd Brown
though t the we alth neede d to be shared
so he proceeded to ta ke the b iggest
sh are and let Chris h ave second. Chuck
Bittle an d J im Privett each claimed a
third .

Waffle and Doug Davenport in the
250cc class and Denny Aguirre and Dave
Lujan in the Open Expert. Tim had to
settle for second place as Doug
Davenport won the 250cc Expert Short
Track. It looks like the McWhorters will
soon have two sons co mpe tin g in th e
Pro ran ks since Tim just got his license
and is on his way.
Pat Richmond, the only triple winner
of the night, got two of his wins in the
Mini Division Short Track and half-mile
with little eight-year-old Gene Jenkins
pi cking up the Short Track Division II
and running second to Pat on the
half-mile. He was really looking up town
and co uld become quite a threat during
the summer months.
Eddie Drake took the IOOcc Novice
Short Tra ck ov er Cliff Whetstone, then
turned around and added icing to the
cak e by winning th e 125cc Novice over
David Jenkins an d Rex Bonh am.
Jenkins spurred on by little brother's
win or sibling rivalry, smoked them bad
on th e I 25cc half-mile with second time
out and much imp ro ved Qiff Mathews
collecting th e sec o nd pl ace gold. Cliff it
was obvious, did some jetting and
gearing to his KX 125 and it definitely
showe d .
Eddi e San Ro m an all gro wn up from
the m ini cycle ranks found out the third
