Santa Barbara reply Your letter concerning our District 37 race, April 20, again shows th at you misrepresent opinion as fact and th at you are insensitive to di fferent surr o undin gs and different trac ks. Our major co ncern in p uttin g on a race is rider safety. Ou r track requires a lot o f preparation bec ause of th e gro un d , which is m ostl y silt y dirt. This ta kes time, yo u can't have bo th a sh o rt rac e sch edule and tr ack watering an d main tenance during the day . We agree that the ra ce started late ; h o wever, we feel the rest of yo ur co m men ts are inval id. As for practice, each gro up was allotted the same amo un t of ti me, 10 minutes. We can 't be responsib le for riders who ge t out to practice la te . No one else co mplained that they o nly got t wo lap s. You said that a t least o ne hal f of th e racers were local p ie plates , not tr ue! According to the entries, 1 14 were district riders an d 49 were pie p late ri ders. We absorbed all the p ie plates .in to th e regular distri ct rac es ex ce pt for th e 125 Novice class wh ich re quired two extra divisions. Ou r tr ack is smaller and therefore can n o t safe ly handle m ore than 24 riders per race. Yo u also state d that "the fin al ra ce o f the firs t ro und st arted aro und th ree. Nat ur ally , th e secon d m otos were all sh or tene d in o rder to beat darkness." If you left the trac k a t 12 ;30, thi s state men t is not even opinion. it is assu mp ti on . You stated that we as a club are to o tight to care about others. It appears that a) adj us ting th e number of ri de rs in a moto rel ated to track conditions an d sa fe ty, b) caring fo r the track before an d during the race da y , and c ) just by putting on a District 3 7 motocross, shows our concern. If we didn 't care, o ur race day could be done by th re e but wi th more injuries and poorer rac in g co ndi ti ons. It appeared that the only complaint throughout your letter was th at th e day was going to be a long one, which it was. In talking to yo u at the race , it seemed that the major reason for yo ur concern was that you had a dinner engagem en t that evening. That 's y o ur problem, not ours. When we travel to Carlsbad and other places fo r dis trict races, it takes us up to fo ur hours to drive home, but we consider it p art of racing because it is. When we asked yo u for suggestions how to make the program run faster, your only comment was to ei the r kick out the pie plates or throw them all in with the 125 Amateur/Expert class, which would have amounted to 56 riders in one class . This clearly goes against the District 37 rules if not com m on sense. In the future, may we humbly suggest two things: 1. Don 't present y o ur opi!,ion as fact. 2. Try not to plan your social engagements on Sunday evening. SANTA BARBARA START ERS M.C. Dusty Red Dot thanks Myself. This is possibly one of the m ost unorthodox letters you have ever received, however , I will co ntin ue in the sincere hopes that you will see fit to print it for me. I h ave been a motorcycle enthusiast for over two thirds of my life. Being an enthusiast who has always been in some type of sale s position, it was only nat ural t ha t I eventually wound up working in the hobby that 1 lo ve as a salesman. Soon I found myself in the position of sales manger. Shortly thereafter was added the du tie s of parts department manager. I have also worked as servi ce writer, service manager within a dealership. It was also in evitable that 1 wound up working for an Eastern Europ ean motorcycle distributor. 1 worked fo r them in the mid-west as district manager for three y ears . After that period of time the responsibility of t he mid-west, eastern and southern states became mine. 1 then transferred to the west coast states to run the western operation. After being out here for about six months, the parent company saw fit to eliminate the entire west coast operation. This new development left this author unemployed. This author has traveled through 37 of our 50 states representing motorcycles and accessories in all of them. This author, then turned to the automotive industry . I started as a salesman for a large L.A. South Bay new car dealer. After three months 1 was promoted to dispatcher for the service departmen r, Lat er 1 was made sales manager for a used car dealer. After four mon ths I was promoted to sal e s /general manager. Shortly PATRICK E. FIEDEKE Secretary Bar Benders West Outdoor Nation information Information p lease. Rem em ber, the " Outdo or Nation" is much like a United Nations of o u t d oo r r e cr eat ion organizatio ns . . . Edito r Super Hunky go home! I must heartil y protest th e May 20 th letter by Rick Siern an and J im Learnahan regarding the Santa Barbara St arters. I, to~, was a t the ra ce , and yes, it was run very la te. Bu t what those two failed to mention, many of us often ta ke for granted : th e St arters is a club . not a professional promoter! Th ese people are volun tee ring th eir time and efforts to give ingrates like Sieman and Learnahan a distri ct race! Last year , there were only 14 motocro sses sche d uled on the . District calendar .. .The Santa Barbara Starters not only put on four of those rac es , but they provided their track for an additional on e by ano ther club. Rick Sieman, I wish you would go somewhere else! The majority of the regular Distri ct riders realize that sponsoring clubs depend on the volunteer work of their members and do not demand perfection all the time. After all, being a club of individual people, they do care about the riders they are rid ers themselves - and if they didn 't truly wan t to give us their best. wh y would they bother? Unlike y ou r professional promoter, club members particularly the referee - do not get paid for putting up with characters like Sieman or other such sn ivelers who seem to think that the way to sell magazines is to tear nice people down!
