It's go ing well, th e only thing lacking is a go od tum-out of riders. Only tw enty-nin e of them showed up but next week, May 27th, the action will switch to short track which is more popular. The Minis had a very big turn-out and went at it for three motos, Th ese riders have a blast running full throttle on the half-mile. They have plenty of eagerness Starter Roxy Rockwood t oo . established law and order from the beginning and pu t two of them in th e back row for jumping. Two bikes tangled, on e flipping so high that it smacked in to the chainlin k fen ce at the top of the bank. Things were shut down in a hurry and though it was . spectacular, the riders were only bumped around a bit and walked awa y . While waiting for th e re -sta rt , one funny note. We were told that a fe w of th e Pros were discussin g Mike Minnig in complaining tones. His 125 was pulling righ t with some o f that fancy equipment down the straights ! They 're trying to figure out how. In the restart Mike was running seventh for a while, then eighth and then his bike decided it had had enough and it packed up, but the co mp ari so n between a good 125 and a 250 isn 't so great any more. Vince Mead became the leader this time with Vern Maxwell reall y after him and Sportsman Mike TIdwell in third. Craig Armstrong was moving righ t along and ended up with a second in a wild finish. Just as Maxwell approached the flag his rear wheel locked solidly but he held on to third. • Results in Results Section. Bill Ca in (148 r) and Earl Roloff (72r) da zzl ed t he cro wd as they rode to first and second in the Open Expert class. Paul Napoleone leading the last lap of t he 500 Am ateur Expert race. 22 First round leader Pete Ham es (lion) had it all tu cked in going down the back straight but Pat Richmond (Yam) and Bob Crisp (Yam ) passed him . Towards th e en d, Mike Paulson (Yam ) passed Ham es whil e Todd Brown reall y mad e a run on Bob Crisp co ming ou t of th e north tum, but co ul dn' t be at Crisp to th e flag. From then on it was who had th e most horsepower with th e starter livening things up a bit by staggering th e star t with the quickest men at the back. But it was to be Pat Richmond, Todd Brown and Bob Crisp every time. Vince Mead showed he was going to be the man to be at by winning th e first 250 h eat pulling away. Behind him Craig Armstrong (Yam) had a bit of a chase to ca tch and pass Randy Bowsman (Yam ) for the second spot. Second heat had two riders sent to th e back ro w at the start. Young Mike TIdwell (Yam ) again showed th em he was a match for any Pro and shot into the lead. Things were very busy in the turns for the first couple of laps, as Vern Maxwell (Yam) made his way from the back row up through the pack passin~ Don Roberts (Yam) and Jeff Wiles (Yam) to second. Vern then went to the au tside on the no rth turn and passed TIdwell. In the semis Mike Devlin (Yam) took th e first one easily and Mike Tidwell won the second with Randy Bowsman riding hard for one of th e transfer places. Th e Main started well with Vern Maxwell in the lead, TIdwell, Do n Roberts (Yam ) and Craig Armstrong fo llowing. Roberts and Armstr on g wor ked past TIdwell and th en all hell broke loose between tum one an d tw o. As a result of a broken fuel pump on the water truck, t he track go t quit e d usty as the day wore on, and ta king the earl y lead was importan t, Gambe t ta did take the early lead in th e first mota, n ever to be challe nged. Rick Kehoe (Mnk) and But ch Linden (Bul) fo llowe d. The second rna to saw Kehoe get th e h ole shot , a ft er two aborti ve starts fo r the nervous Expe rts. He was foll ow ed cl osely by Gambetta, who sq ueez ed by for the lead after half a lap, and held on for t he win. Kehoe held on for sec o n d followed by Alan Delarge (Yam ) in third. Andy Segale (Bul) sm o ked the 250 Experts, with only Allen Coo ke (Bul) ch allenging. Andy han dil y won the first moto, followed by Coo ke an d Robbi e Bran d (Yam). In th e second moto it was Coo ke who go t the hole sho t , followed closely by Andy. As t he two passed th e sco ring tower and rounded the st art sweeper, Andy we nt o utside and Allen we nt ins ide. The o utside line proved to be quicker as Andy moved in to a lead t ha t would only be stretched and nev er relinquishe d. Cooke m aintained for sec o nd, whil e Brand snagged th ird. TIm Sarian (Hus) put in a go od ride to grab first Am ateur. Th e Op en Expert s wer e hi ghli gh ted by Paul Napoleo nes surpris in g second mota ride. In th e firs t round J im Con noll y (Bul) too k the early lea d, foll owed by Napo lco ne , only an Am ateur . Paul crashed however , leaving Chuck Pettigrew (Mai) in second. Pettigrew closed on Co nnolly , but went out for a short tim e with a wound ed Maico . Co nnolly was left with su ch a big lea d t hat he even had t ime to pl ay in the giggle weeds, as he m issed a c omer, in the lo wer section. Jim was followed by To m Bice (CZ), a n Am at eur, and Napoleone, Th e second moto saw Napoleone take t he early lead , and hold o n to it for most o f the mota. He was followed by Pettigrew and Connolly. On the fourth lap Pettigrew low sided on a slippery right bander, leavin g Connolly a clean shot at Napoleone, Jim fin ally pass ed Nap oleone on the 10th lap , only to crash a few laps la ter, giving Paul the moto w in. In Exper t act io n Ed die Lawson grabbed three trophies fo r his wins in th e 12 5 and 250 classes. Dynamit e Dylan Neih ar t aced out Lizardo 's bulli sh second and Roachs ' Yamaha to grab two first place trophies. Th e 250 Expe rts stole t he sh ow on th e half-mile, Bill Cain's twin led th e first lap with Garden Grove 's Gary Coffman on his rear fender looking for the o pening. Th at came when Cain slid off the groove going up, up and aw ay o ver the north corner (th an k goodn ess, . no wall!). Coffman led the Experts for four laps until his engine sent him spectating in lap seven. Following Cain over the north co rn er was hard-driving Jim Nosek who brought his screaming twin in for a second. Back to the st arting line for the Ope n Expert ha lf-mile, Cain 's twin took the lead until lap three as Roloff's extra horses pulled away for the win . In TT big bore actio n , it was Number One where he should be , Mike Laney taking th e chec kered, with Earl Roloff wrapping up the number two trophy. • Results in Results Section. Honda mounted Alison Fourteen-year-old Broc Glover (Hus) snatc hed the win away from Tony Wanket (Hon) in the 125 Expert class in today 's Superbowl Hamilton from G.A.F.B. held off hard-driving Cindy Dumas for seven laps in the Min i Powder Puff TT Main until she slid off the groove in lap eight giving . Cindy the edge she needed to trophy. New Honda on a new TT course was the secret for Lom ita 's " Leapin g Lizard" Tom Lizardo, as he edged out ten other 0·82cc minis for first. Mini Novice winner Gene Jenkins showed the regulars the way around the half-mile and drove hard for second in the new Mini TT Sweepstakes won by POW m ounted Randy Bennett. J eff Moon and Wally Byers pl ayed checkers fo r first and third in 250 Novice action, with Terry McCreery holdi ng seconds in both. Scott Thurlow, showing im pro verne n t ea ch rac e, rode Victorville in to the winner 's circl e. by outdicing Don Johnson and Bobbi MX high school ra ce qualifer, Tony took the win in the first mota with a large lead. But in the second, while leading with the same amount of air -space, Tony 's Elsie just plain " qui t. " Broc blasted up from a mediocre sixth-place start and crui sed in to the winner's circle. Dan Schramm of the San Diego Coin Exchange Racing Team pulled two holeshots in the 125 Junior class, leading from wire to wire in both motes, ex cept for three laps in the first m ota. After repassing Val Deilgat (Han), it was Schramm (Hon ) all the way, followed by Deilgat and Jim Bur ton on a new RM Su zu ki. J eff Wenzel took ye t another win in the 25 0 Jun ior class on his Maico . When is it go ing to stop ? It's be en ab o ut seven st raigh t wins ! •
