David Gerig of th e Car lsbad Raceway Team cleanly grandslammed the 125 Intermediates on his Su zuki. Beh ind the TM ace was James Aldin (Yam ) on a Monoshock and Byron Barton on an Elsinore. Mark Toycen grabbed th e to p trop hy away from John J ar d in at the finish of th e 12 5 Junior race by zapping him acr o ss the chec kere d. Thi s was th e hill here speed was as imp ortant as ower, and th e bikes were all geare d to Bruce Kunzler. the "Sidewinder .. demonstrates one method of geiting off the bike. Admittedly. this is not the recommended dismounting technique I ma ke t he maximum use ~f every bit of speed they could m ust er. Saddl ebac k's Hili-In-Th e-Hole is n ot a run th at is popular with th e smaller ' bikes. They don' t like the deep, soft stuff that co llects at the base of the hill, they scare off fro m the sharp rocks th at j ut out in the mid dle of the run, and none of them have ever managed to get up to the steep face of the hill . In the 125 cc class, the riders ar e not afraid of the hill . Several of them h ave be en known t o take those powerful li ttl~ bikes right over the top . .. bu t not m a regular clim b. Today 's win we n t to Dave Po well on h is 125cc Suzuki with a climb o f 28 7 feet. Dru Haase : new t o hillclimbin g, took hi s 125 Hon da to th e 16 8 fo ot mark for a second pla ce . Tom T urner, wh o usually domin ates this class, had t o settle fo r a disapp oin ting 15 8 feet and third pla ce . In th e 250 stoc k clas s it became a father and son race. Dave Powell bo rr o wed his dad's 25 0 Suzuki an d sped over t he hill on th e first run. He cloc ke d an exc ellen t time of 10 .83 seconds. None of the other bikes even cam e close until th e last man in the class, Ron Powell. Old Dad got on his bike (t he o ne his. son had ridden ) an d managed t o m ake I t over the top. His time was 11.35, good eno ugh for second pl ace . That ex t ra 40 pounds that Old Dad carri ed may have bee n the de ciding factor. To no one's surprise, the win in the 25 0 m odi fied class went to Wes Evans o n his Bulta co . This is the bike th at took first place at the Widowrnaker earlier in the month. Evans' time was a super fast 8.8 5 seconds. Craig Mock, mounted on a 3 6 0 Yamaha, took first place in bot h th e 3 60 stock and modified clas ses with a run of 9 .08 an d 8. 6 1. His JMI teammat e, Kerry Peterson (also a winn er at th e Widowrnaker) took th e 4 0 0 st ock class. Then it was Wes Evans again. This time Evan s was on a 4 0 0 Suzuki, and he n ew up the hill at 8.4 1 for a first pl ace in the 400 modified class. Jumping class, Evans took the same bike up in th e 4 50 modified clas s ' again for a firs t pl ace. The 50 0 stoc k clas s was on e of t he biggest of th e day . It included several riders new to the sport , as well as some o f the old hands. The win went to a well seasoned rider, Carl Colli er with a time o f 9.11 se conds. Ron Thom pson took a first pl ace in th e 500 modified cl ass, jumped to the 650 m odified fo r an o the r first , then to t he Open class for a sec o n d. After th at he e n t~ re d the overall run (open to all clas s WInners ). and with a flyin g takeoff, post ed fast ti me o f the day, a speedy 7.81.secon.ds and th e top trophy. Wmn :r m t he 650 s~ock class was Big John Bjorkman o n hIS Tri umph . And Neal Mac kel , record holder fo r fast t ime at th e Hill-In-The-Hole, took fir st in th e Open class.
