It was go o d racing in t ha t cla ss wit h a competition go ing b et ween J ohnson and Dorothy Rowe (Ya m) with Brad Oxley (Yam) in th ere with a full measure . Dorothy, wh o manages to ge t 'em o ff the line most o f the t ime was re all y trying to ge t Dave and co nseq u en tl y go t a bit over-anxious a co uple of times, and with Oxley never out of con t entio n, th ings were exciting. The Open Novices were all business too . Ro y Stafford (Ka w) and Mike Baeder (Yam) were really doing so me fancy skiddin '. Third moto, Baeder zap ped by Bob Gallup (Mai) to take t he lea d w hile Stafford was left struggling in the t urn trying to get his gas turned on . BSA, Tri u mph and Bultaco sized off in the Op en Ex pe rt. It was a t h ree way go in the Open Expert ra ce between Mike J ones o n th e 'B uI, Mar k Fit z gerald on the Beezer and R. J . Stone on t he Trium ph . "S to ney, " wh o was cele brating his birthday , came in second overall. The Johnson-Rowe battle res u med in the 250 Expert TT with J o hnson winning it. Doro thy had to settle fo r a third overall behind Greg Wilhi te (Yam). Hard lu ck guy of the night was Steve Robb (H.D) in the 35 0 Novice class. He had wo n the first two motes going away with Dirt Digger Bo b Ward (Yam) in second. Getting a flat tire just before the third ro und he signalled for two-minutes and Gerry Burton gave it to him. Then in a bit of con fusion Burton let 'e m go and Robb ca me flying up out of th e p its and just co ul d n' t make up the lost time. The error cos t him his first but at the trophy presentation Gerry explained th e sit ua ti on and Robb was given a troph y alo ng with winner Ward who wr apped it up with h is tw o sec o nds an d a fir st . Th e th ree leaders in th e Open Ex p ert go were n aturall y the fastest, bu ild ing up a lead over the rest o f the field eac h tim e. Rick Hutchins (Tr i) p ulled out all the stops but j ust co uld n ' t ca tch the super-fast Paul Lambert ( Yam ). On the second rno ro , Lambert shot in to th e lead as though he had a small ro c ket artache d somewhere . _ Resul ts in Res ults Section . Coliseum High School MX The' High School program run by S.A.M. at last year's Sup erbouil was so successful we h ave contracted w ith S.A.l\1. to run it again but so more st udents can en ter we have expan de d the program to Frid ay night also . Here is h ow it works: qualifying races are bein g run now at Ascot, Indian Dunes, Carlsbad, OCIR. Irwindale and Antelope Valley and several others are under con sideratio n . In ad ditio n Russ Sanford of M.O . R. E. in Sacramento is qualifyin g ra ces in coord inating Northern California under the dire ction o f S.A.M . Th ere will eventua lly be 10 to 12 tracks throughout Califo rnia running be t wee n 80 to 120 t otal qualifying ra ce s to select 36 0 riders in 100, 125, and 250cc clas ses for th e Friday nigh t, J uly 18 Coliseu m High Sch ool Mot ocross We have st ruc t ure d the p oints system and qualifyin g slots to give studen t competitors an equal opportunity to qualify fo r th e Friday Nigh t Cham pionsh ip . J eff J ennings (BuI) and Mark Tyer (Yam ) were battling it out in the first moto o f the 125 Pros with Jennings finall y pulling away an d passing Cliff Lett (Ho n) for the win. In the second an d third ro unds it was all Tyer's sh ow with only minor problems coming from Dave Williams (DG) in both races. Two of the local shoes, Dave Pessy (Mo n) and Joe Johnston (Oss) were elbow to elbow from the drop of t he ga te in the first moto. Pessy scored wins in the first two races then overshot a turn and had to work his way back up to second in the last round. Bill Ru b ley skated to th ree easy win s in the 500 class with only brie f co mpetition co ming from _ Ray Lopez (CZ) . Each trac k has been allocated a number of entrants fo r each class fo r th e Jul y 18th Ch ampionship based u po n the fre q uen cy o f events and th e total n umber of studen ts wh o are co m pet ing at the track. Poi n ts will be awarded to riders in each qualifying class on the basis o f the followin g: l st place - 50 points, 2nd plac e - 49 points, 3 rd place - 4 8 poin ts , 4 th place - 47 points, and so on. Th ese points shall be awarded at the en d of the day 's racin g to eac h overal l fin ishi n g p osition . An y rid er en tering an d sta rt ing th e first moto bu t not fin ishin g all motes to re ceive an overal l position shal l receive 10 p oin ts. The Program in fo rms the Stu de n t Body that their age gro up m akes up a larg e percentage o f the motocross riders, th at local ra cing eve nts arc taking place and we also help form their on-campus ' club . Also included in t he program is a filmed life 'st ory of 17' year-old Marty Tripes, and how he won the Superbouil of Motocross twice in a ro w. Th e Assembl y also deals with the very im portant topic of safe ty by using both a safety film and safety printed mat eri al. Phy sical fitness in cycling, safe th in king while riding or racing, and the Coliseum High School . Championships Jul y 18th at the Los An gele s Coliseum are o the r t opics c overed . Listen to KEZY Radio- I 19 0 fo r more ~~~ - CMC: Opening night at Ascot By Mi ke Klinger GARD ENA, CAL., lilA Y 7 Wed nesday nigh t was th e sta rt o f th e Husqvama Traini ng Cen ter double winners starting with mi ni rider Pat Richmond who ran away with the TT and half-mil e classes leaving the hassles to Chris Cannon and Todd Brown who divided the second place honors. Chris got the nod on the TT with Todd picking up the half-mile ho no rs. Not to be outdone, Eddie Drake followed Pat's act with his double win in the I OOcc Novice go. Eddie 's going to have a re al problem when he earns his transfer to Amateur since he also rides a 12 5cc bike and it m igh t be a bit tricky trying to ride both. Rick Blankenship wh o ran sec ond to Eddie lo o ks to be t he ride r to ta ke over as top dog when Ed moves up. Eddie Lawson was in to p form an d was un beatable in t he 125cc Expert TT and hal f-mile whi ch he wo n ove r Mik e Tidwell. Mike , not one to le t anything get him down, joined the d ou bles club by win ning the Expert 250cc TT and half-mile and m aking it loo k easy as a Sunday ri de. Randy Bird who hasn' t been out fo r a while, out foxed Dan Johnson on the TT for the second b ut had the tables turne d on the half-mile where he got the third place slot. Rick Warren "founded out the elite group taking the 250cc Expert twin over Mike TIdwell and TIm McWhorter and then running away from Paul Lambert in the Open Expert half-mile. TIm !\Ic Whorter was sporting some very ja zzy new leathers and he wasn't th e only one since Bobbi Hunter didn't look too shabby in hers. Rod Sexton who hasn 't raced Corona in well over a year didn 't have any problems finding his wa y around on the Open Expert half-m ile, Brian Garcia got the jump o ff th e line and it appeared it was going to be his ball ' game , but Rod al way s managed t o get aro und Brian and from there on out it was all she wrote. Dave Racine was third. Jim Re dding a first' time outer must have been co w trailing so m e place the wa y he disposed of the Open Novice TT com pet it io n. Dave Des tler , ano ther new face , was the on ly one close enough to catc h J im but unfort una tely it wasn 't close enough. Dennis Agu irre was ridi ng an airplane incogni to th e way he ran away from th e fiel d in the Open Novice hal f-m ile. Robert Raffle and Mike Stewart were second an d third.
