Aksland, after four previous weeks of trying to become the th ird roo kie to win, was up front until lap 10. Then Hoc king, riding his best race in ' 75, grabbed the lead . After seven laps Ro be rts was still fifth but cl ose en ough to try and m ove up. With Hocking in fro nt and the laps runnin g o u t, few gave Roberts mu ch of a chance for more than third, or second at best . But the Champ started to find the fast way ar o und and h ow to keep the back of the machine on the ground. The final two laps fo und him up to second ahead of Aksland, J o rgen sen and Allis on . But Hocking was in control. The Ascot bred ride r then pulled the pin on the final lap and closed heading fo r the first tum. On the backstretch he pulled even an d got the lead by inches. In the tum Hocking took it back. Com in g out of the last t um they were dead eve n . Then Ro berts drove to th e insi de and p ull ed out the win in the last 20 yards, running his Asc ot two nigh t st reak to eight straight events without a los s. Not a sin gle person was le ft sitting as he • took the flag. Both riders received a e. roaring ovation. , Aksl and again r ode an impressive ra ce to finish bu t sh o we d tha t he lacks the experien ce in th e final laps. Allison , who pulled a third in th e Semi, came from th e back row starting spot to fin ish a soli d fo urth over the fad ing Jorgensen. J unior p oint leader St eve Eklund came up with en gine t ro ubles in practice and di d n ot compete. It left the doo r wide open fo r Dan McWhorter who did not miss the opportunit y . Th e River sid e rider t urned in the fast Junior tim e tri al , won his heat race with the best five lap time an d th en went on to run away with the final and pull to within 10 points of Ekl und heading into the May 16th finale. Mead could take over the poin t le ad with a win an d win it h e did. The Garden Grove rider was up fro n t all th e way b ut it was close afte r two m istak es cost hi m a ru naw ay .
