From p ractice to the final moto thick, silty dus t got into everything including engines, eyes and cameras. The riders just couldn ' t see wh ere they were going on the ridiculously short track. Rick Burgett from Sandy , Oregon was one rider who st ayed ahead of the dust. Burgett, ridin g a new MX Yamaha (n on-YZ ), had a good day in the 250 class , mainly because he won and went pretty fast doing it. At the start of the first 2 50 race Ken Zahrt (Ma n) ro cketed awa y with the perverbial hole shot. Following Zahrt not too far behind wer e Pierre Karsmakers (Ha n ) and J im Weinert who was also riding one of the new 250 Yamahas. Weinert got by Karsmakers and set out after Zahrt, but now Kars makers was closing up again. Meanwhile , Rick Burgett was on his way up from abo ut sixth at the start. After a short battle with Zahrt he soon got by. Weinert crashed at about the half-way point just in front of the scorers, but Pierre never got by because he W"dS dodging a lapped rider at the same time. Bruce McDougal (Yam ) hassled with Zahrt for awhile then moved into fo u rth where he stayed for the rest of the race. Weinert won with four seconds on Pierre and Rick Burgett. After a long del ay which included th e water truck getting itself stuck; th e final 250 ra ce go t underway . Zahrt again pulled the plug on everyone else. Coming up in second and thi rd were Parry Klassen (Man) and Gary Ogden (Yam). Rick Burgett was back in fourth . Burgett started his procession forward and within two laps he h ad taken over the lead. Gary Ogden was running second and way back about 15 seconds, was Tim Hart (Yam) , who was up from ab o u t 15th on lap one. Still further ba ck was Weinert who got held up on the first lap and was almost last. Weinert was chargin g hard on the new Yamaha ; which he seems to Iike to ride wide open. Burgett finished first with no problems, Tim Hart had worked his way into second place, displacing Gary Ogden. Weinert could onl y work up to seventh. Bruce McDougal was the most co nsisten t rider of the day with his fou r-fo ur score for second overall. Third pla ce went to Jim Weinert, who if he hadn 't passed Zahrt on the last lap would have ended up fourth instead of third. J im West (Mai ) sh a t out front at the start of the first 500 race, with Pierre Karsrn akers (Han ) second and Bill Clements (Hus) third . Pierre had bi ke problems and pulled off, leaving West again with th e lead . But West, struc k with a bad cran k seal, dropped out. Meanwhile, Terry Clark (Hus), Dou~ Sherman (Mai ) and Jim Turner (Bul) started having it o ut on their own. Turner pressured Sherman and got by, then set out after O ark, but it was too lat e as the nag cam e out.
