She rman was now runnin g first with Terry Dark in second and Dave Longcor (Hus) in third . Dark applied the pressure to Sherman an d was by in abo u t a lap. J im Turner, m o vin g up hard, soon cam e upon Longcor and She rman. For several laps these th ree ride rs were really close. Washington high school MX By Sue Sykes PUYALLUP, WASH ., APR. 20 Last year's winners, Lindberg High Sch ool , ac te d as school spo nso rs o f the George Babcock Mem orial High School Mo tocross Chall en ge and provided th e fantastic trophies. What a great bunch of people - they all had red Lindberg MX jerseys and like th e other 300 rid ers , a giant amount o f school spirit. Rogers High School of Puyal lup placed first o verall with 23 0 0 points. Bethel High School, Spanaway , scored second and Curtis High School, Tacoma, earned third place. Both motos 0 f th e 100 A - B classes were fast running contests. Mark Luchini, Pat J acobson (Yam), and Bre t Rochester rode super fast an d extra hard in their battle for first troph y. No on e else ever got near as they took every jump of the co urse with spectacular ease . Luchini (Suz) took seco nd in the first moto but after a second moto battle with Ro chester (Hon) too k th e lead to ge t the flag and a win . The 125 B had three hot ones in . today and wh en th e scoring finished th e riders tied fo r first p oints. In th e first moto Terry Haakenson (Ho n ) took adv an tage of a super start - Marvin Sykes (Hon) and Todd Stewart (Ho n) followed. On m oto two Sykes led from th e first S tum but wen t wid e on the h airpin abo ut hal way and Stewart go t under him. Haakenson score d th ird. Th e fin ish determined th e trophy delivery and Stewar t too k home a firs t . In the 250 Pro clas s the finish of mota two was a d o uble Carlsbad Wolsink. Rick Weidman (Ho n) an d Bob Boo ck (Yam) p ut on a thrilling battle in both motos - riding so h ard and so fast it mad e you wonder wh at would b reak first - bikes or men . Weidman came o ut on top in th e first moto b ut b oth guys kn ew th e winner of th e last mota would claim th e bi ggest trophy , more muney , and th e win . The last leg of th e race is a big Sturn and a climb to Rain ier Jump. What a finish - both riders and mach ines collided in mid air. They both wal ked away - just a few bruises. Th e scoring went to Weidman but th e guys both coll e cted the sam e amount of first money fo r the great ride. At the end of the day chee rs were heard as t he winning high school was announced. They have on e ye ar to get a team together for th e next rac e - and a fte r possession or th e giant Winners ' Trophy for a year - th ey1 1 want it ba ck again - bu t so will every other high sch ool. • Resul ts in Results Sec tion. Butch sweeps fifth at Pioneer By Ann <;arr OA KDALE, CAL ., APR. 20 J eff " Butch" Davidson, Number One black-plater in Distric t 36 in 197 3, illustrated that his form is indeed back as he swept his fifth co nsec u tive Open Exp ert Main at Pioneer Are na. Ben Zakarian foll owed a IT win Saturda y n ight at Lodi with a first in the 125 B Main on the rough co urse today. The 125 A Main wen t to Laird Byrhni abo ar d a Ho nda (Hon da took four or six top hies in the event). Junior ac ti on today featured th e Frances Lopes-Raivo Trubok renewal in th e Open Junior ra ce. Lopes again was th e winner but Raivo followed his sec o n d in the Op en with another second behind Billy Rose's Penton in the 250 Junior Main. Riding the half-mile groove at Orland By Rex Backman ORLAND, CAL. , APR. 27 Jim Crenshaw , Steve Diet z, Sh ane Scott and you thful Yamaha rider Randy Mam ola took home the first place cash with their win s in tod ay's Exp ert classes. Crenshaw (No r) led over a d ozen 750 cc Expert /Junior riders into t he firs t tum o r their m ain even t. Traili ng Crensh aw at the tim e were Mike O'Brien (Yam) with Den nis Ro binso n and Larry Legarra figh ting fo r th ird . Com in g out of t um fo ur, O'B rien swep t by Crenshaw as th ey rode down th e fr ont straigh t. With th e race hai r com plete , Cren shaw tried to regain th e lead as he wen t inside o f O'Bri en in tum n um ber three. They rode down th e front straight side by side. O'Brien had th e advantage entering th e first co m er an d se t up ju st inches ahead of Crenshaw. Crenshaw was not ab o u t to quit. Huggin g th e rail he dove under Mike wide en tering tum two. This was all Jim needed as he went on fo r the win. Mike O 'Bri en also led the firs t part o r th e 360 Expe r t Main with Lowell Moural (Bul), Steve Diet z (Bu l) and Larry Silva in two. Moural pulled off with bike problems allowing Die tz and Silva to move up in to second an d third. Dietz slo wly was cu t tin g down O'Brien's le ad as Kirk Tardi ff and Dave Fari a had moved past Silva to fight over third.
