This was wh ere o ne of th e few hangups appe are d - riders went throu gh the section on e at a tim e an d m ost o f them were very tri ed and very th irsty , so the wait seemed endless. But once the rider go t through he was just ab o u t finished. The acc ele ra tio n and braking test was th e last section. Here the rid ers blasted down a short, smooth field and the n st opped as fast as they co uld . If one overshot the line he was penalized. After this th e rid er co ul d head ba ck to the van , drink a cold be er and wonder wh at it must be Ii ke to do th is fo r six days. Chu ck Bradl ey was warmin g up fo r th e Men 's Mini, coas te d around the first tum and just laid it eve r-so-gen tly into th e dirt, face down. We used to th ink Robbie lzza t was smal l. Yesterday his li t tle brother was in tro d uce d in to th e Mini class, tiny Troy Izz at , This boy is so small, he lo o ks like a mosquito sitting on a Mini. But ride - he's going to be a st rea k like his brother. There was an abundance of riders and spectators out to see two hilarious events; the race between some prominent law enforcement officers and a new thmg for thi s particular track, Men 's Min i ra ces. The " local law " in volve d were three very good sports, Gran ts Pass Ci ty Chief Norm Hedgepath, Police Josephine County Sh eriff Jim Newby, and Medford City Police Chief Orl o I\IcGee. Chief Hedgep ath h ad n ever even been on a bi ke until th e Fri da y even ing before th e races! On the s ta r t, Hedgep ath gassed it to o h ard and sen t his scoote r over backwards and as all wer e pic king up and lin ing up fo r a restart, an o ffice r appe ared with his little ticket book. All three lawmen wer e given a ti cket for n o m o torcycle endorsem en t and practicin g on the stre e t. (The o ffi cer giving th e citations clai med he 'd just caugh t up wi th the m!) Also ticketed was Hedgep ath , fo r o verloa ding! Hmmm - enough sai d about that o ne! Th e l\len's l\linis, fro m prac tices to mains are abs olutely h ila rious ! Ho w else can you explain the an tic s o f these big, ove r-gro wn kids ridi n g on little , hi tty minibikes? You have to see to be lieve th e li kes o f ' Big Daddy ' Denn is Miller , o r Chuck Bradle y going off the high -sid e, or T om l\liller laughing as he goes en d-o ver off t he track. Or maybe Jim Miller an d Carlos Urib e wobbling into each other and crashin g. Wayne Williams sh o uld hav e le arned afte r laying it down on th at second tum ; but he 'di dn 't ! In the 250 D Main, he put it down, ju mped up, roared around the track and did the same th in g in the same place. Dave McCullum didn't have much better luck, ex cept h e picked a different landing spot th e second time around. Rich Word showed his heels to the rest of the B Main even t , intent on th at first place and a tr an sfer to the A Main.
