Added to this were strictures against outsid e aid or co m mun ica t io n and, to top it off, all tools used had to be carried on the bike. All this added a new element to enduro riding as one H rider found e" out when he kicked over his engi ne at the starting line. He kicked an d kicked until the one m inute passed and he began to p ush past the pe nal ty, line. His spark p lug cap was disconnected from the spark pl ug and the spectators nearby coul d see this but everyone stood there mutely , knowing that the rider would be penalized even more if they attempted to help him. This rider dropped 20 points at the starting line before he realized his error. This may seem a little severe but as Jeff Hammond, the guiding spirit behind th e event said: "The purpose of this event was to give lo cal riders some experience in ISDT procedures and hopefully to further the Un ited States ' effort and in terest in the Six Days." The 240 riders who cam e to th e run began to pick up that experience right at the start. Th e course itsel f was laid ou t along established trails and bulldozed firebre a ks to a subst antial extent, even though the Forest Servi ce did give the Ramblers about 20 miles o f newly o pen ed paths to work wi th. The cru nc h c am e on the special test sections on each loop. These were timed runs over very difficult terrain. A rider would have to go as fast as he could up ridgesides b y way of very narrow, twisting traces - most of it first and second gear work - and th rough tigh t , ro ck lit tered woods tr ail to keep his minute and to gain extra mi nutes if possible. These test sections were used as tie -breakers and the a dvan tage wen t to the riders who c ould banzai over t he rough stuff the fastest . The riders encountered a good deal of dust in most pl aces and , the water crossin gs were fairly de ep after all the rain of the past wee ks but the most diffi cult task was climbing the three miles of Lett 's Ridge . There must have been at least one hundred sharp turns
