Double Crossers do it By Howard Andrews SIMI VALLEY, CALIF., APRIL 27 At Valley Cycle Park the dirty Double Crossers MC (all 9 of them) put on a superb D-37 motocross. One of th e more unique happenings at this event was that at least 8 different riders snapped chains - this might have be en d ue to the dust, which was tough to swallow at times, o r possibly some of the exotic susp ension systems. One of the victi ms, Tom Halverson, was leading the 12 5 unclassified 1st mota when his ch ain snapped. He came ba ck and won the second moto. In both th e 125 and 500 Expert race s Jim Conolly kept his number 1 p late from gett ing dirty by winning both events. Larry Bird riding a Montesa took first in th e 250 Expert with two firsts. Larry didn 't have an easy time of it as both T. Welker (YZ) an d Tom Sari an (Hu s) gave him a run for th e m oney in the combined Am ateur Expert races. Th e 15 Powder Puffs also m ade t heir mark with J ohanna Stenersen (Ha n) ta king th e Expe rt class, after suffering me chanical problems in the first m ota. Chelle Blythe and Lori Payne battled it out in the Am ateur class, with Blythe taking the overall. _ Results in Results Section. Ascot pilots cleared for take-off By Maureen Lee GA RD ENA, CAL., APR. 23 After being rained out for wee ks in succession, the AMA pilot program finally resumed Tuesday night with all riders using the Ascot hal f·m ile. The Pro -Am class (250{360cc) was the only one with enough riders for a progressive program and they went at it hot and he avy. Steve Fortune (Yam ) took the first he at an d season point leader Vince Mead (Yam) the second and fastest. Rounding out the third heat was Don Waffle on another Yamaha. Th e live lap semi h ad Dale Reed (Yam ) jumpin~ into the le ad with Gordon Kidd (Yam) challengi ng, and Doug Hannon (Bul) moving up to con ten d . From the stands it looked as if Reed possibly m isse d a shift on the back straight as Kidd shot by him, and Hannon m oving up into second. Co me the start o f the main, it was Vin ce Mead put back for jumping by starter Roxy Rockwood. Starting in the back row didn't deter Mead and by the time the pack emerged from tum two with Steve Fortune and Gordon Kidd in first and second, Mead was up in th ird. Kidd m an aged to fe nd him off for a bit but Vince got him on the back straight and moved up o n Fortune. Next lap around things happened in a hurry. A ri der went down and to miss him Dale Reed (Yam) had to lay it down hi mself. The red flag came out and the re-start was In dian- styl e which can either help or hurt y our progress depending on where you were when the flag cam e out. Now Mead w as mu ch closer to Fortune as the flag dropped again , but surprisingly it was Kidd who go t aro un d th e so ut h tum first with the lead , Mead and . Fortune were all bunched to gether. Mead th en got off right in fro nt o f the pack. Fortune was in th e lead agai n with Kidd ch allen ging but Gordon sta rte d ha vin g tro ubles and Tidwell pas sed h im. Kidd then dropped back to fo urth as Don Roberts (Yam ) m oved up a spot. Fortune 's lead wasn't reall y challenged. no doubt he and Mead will resume th eir rivalry. The minis ran the h al f-mil e too and each mota went a little b it faster . Th eir order of fin ish was the same in eac h round. Pat Richmond, Bob Crisp and Todd Brown. Richmond, who is th e point leader, didn 't h ave it all his way as Crisp really challenged him . Behind the three fran t runners and at times righ t with them were Mike Paulson and Chu ck Bittle with Bittle especially getting in the hunt a couple of ti mes. For riding per forman ce the 125 class was really moving t onigh t. First mota it was Wayne Rainey (Han) . and Mike Minnig (Yam) going banzai. Minnig final ly t ook the high gro ove goi ng into tum one and too k over the lead with Tom Doty (Ha n ) in third an d John Birges (Yam) beh ind them . I . Second m ota Minnig wen t to the outside and came out onto the back straight firs t. Rainey was in full pursuit but m issed a sh ift and Minn ig ran away with it. Mike took the third race too, a very satisfying night fo r this youngster and even with the smal l showing this class m ade things in te restin g. _ Results in Results Section. ic '" Open Int. EJlp .
