CALlIDAB I ORANGE, CAL., APR. 27 When th e banner we nt down many riders found out what a long, rough and dusty bomb run is like. Amateur Mike Echertt (Bul) With most of the "name" pros rid ing elsewhere, Rex Staten and a host of Weekend Warriors had themselves a field day. For the led to the bomb followed closely by Fairway Yamaha sponsored Andy Kirker riding a new 400 mo no. One mile past the bomb the course opened up into WFO country. Soon after Echertt made his mistake. Kirker slipped by when Echertt overshot a tum. Mike was not going to give up that easy as he chased Andy until he seized about a mile outside of camp. Well, fate had its way and Kirker had an extended pit stop. Meanwhile, other people were having a better time of it. Kevin Hastens had a nine second pit stop and when he pulled out so did Bruce Ogilivie (H-D) first 250 Expert. The two of them had a d rag race going down pit road for about 100 yards. Suddenly Bruce's interests changed to geology as he decided to take a high sp eed soil sample. The endo caused him to lose the overall. While Bruce was rem o un tin g all he said was, "who was that guy?" With that he took off and resumed serious pursuit of the leader. Andy Kirker had gotten by to take over th e second position with Ogilvie finishing third. Jim Summers came in for fo ur th an d Jim Kirk was a very respectable fifth. First 125 Expert was Bob Ru tt en with 14c in hot pursuit. To round out the top four it was 34c in thi rd and Danny Williams in fourth. First Trail was Charlie Hammill followed closely by team tige r Chris Weber wi th Do ug Martin next in line. The 125 Amateur class saw Steve Cox topping the class followed closely by Randy Williams with his new Amateur stickie, Randy was leading the race but had a ho rrendous crash on the sec ond loop that cost hi m the lea d. Ro undin g o u t the top finishers was first Powder Puff, Trudy Beck. For the nervous Novices it was Jim Bradsley to the bomb first and he carried it for a better part of the race to finish first overall. Dennis Nuckles had a he-hum start but p u t his AI Baker Honda to work and held the lead fo r a short time, He unloaded very hard ab o u t four miles from the finish when his dampener rods snapped. Oin t Perdue finished second and Bill Chaplin pulled down third overall. First . Oldtimer was J erry Carson who finished seventh in the Novice run. • Results Pending. record, "Rocket Rex " swept both Open Pro mo tos, limped in fifth with duff suspension in his first 250 rou nd , then won the second 250 mo t o with Pat Hubbs trailing as the combined 250/125 Pro ra ce degenerated into a survival-of-the-walking-wounded run. By far the largest t urnout was the Old Timers Association, enough riders to fill two full race cards. Big Dum -dum Reporter learned too late that the OTs kept their entries and results separately from the race promoter, or there would be more mention of these guys who seemed to have more fun th an anybody . In 250 Junior, Brad McLeod (Bul) stole the first mo to from Barry Armgard (Mai) under the flag, then hung in second behind Greg Youngblood (C-A) to take the class . Youngblood scored three-one for the day , second in class. McLeod 's second mo to ride was a co me-fro m-b ehind shot, after being badly balked in traffic. Mitch Musgrave (Hon) led out the second 125 Junior moto with Nick Haggard in close co mpany. They stayed nose-tail u ntil mid-race when Haggard hu stl ed by. Ted Va ndenRaadt spen t most of the moto d ueling with J ohn Lewey over third/fourth spot, finally broke clear, and pipped Musgrave on the white flag lap. Mitch 's two-three score gave him the overall, as neither Haggard nor Vanden Raadt had sco red well Vaal Joe Marks, just before he ate it.
