" Tony DiStefano - be st year yet for the former privateer? Doug Sherman, second mota hurts an ' all, took 500 class. DiStefano, Sherman top Uvermore qualifier By Steve Castillo LIV ERMORE, CAL ., APR. 20 Tony DiStefano continued hi s domination of the 250 class at today's qualifier by sweeping both motos across th e board . In contrast to previous weeks' we ather, today's race fea tured some of th e w orst co nditions ever. Du st w as th e m ain ene my , along with go lfb all -size rocks and cement-type surfaces elsewhere. Efforts were m ade to water, but it was mostly in vain. Quite a ra ce started sh aping up in the first 250 moto between second place man Mik e Runyard (C A), Gaylon Mos ier (Mai) and Marty Smith (Ho n ) d oing th e hard char ging in the group. It t o o k Smith seve ral lap s to get a roun d Mo sier and when he did he set off for Run yard. After a bo u t tw o laps of pressure Runyard also su ccumb ed t o the aggressive Honda rider's charge. That 's th e way they finished with DiStefano way o u t front and Smith closing but out o f time, Runyard in third. Mik e Runyard pulled o u t front in m oto two and it was a full lap before Tony DiStefano cam e zooming by ne ver to be see n again. Smith lost hi s chain an d was o u t o f the hun t. Neil J eff Foland snuck in two co nsiste nt rides for fourth 500. -. ..., 30 MacDannald was running third u ntil Gaylon Mosi er cam e up to do battle with the Noguch i rider. Mosier was soon by, but was still a distance back from Runyard. Further back th ere was really some acti on going on with Bill Grossi (Suz) coming up fast fro m a 10th on the first lap, knocking off a position or two a lap , until he finally caught up to Mosier. Grossi and Mosier went at it so fast that it wasn ' t long before they came upon the unsuspecting Ru ny ard, Mosier went by Mike and soon after so did Grossi. Now it was Mosier up to second, being pushed by Grossi again. For at least three laps Grossi was on Mosier's fear fender wai ting fo r a mistake that never cam e. Grossi soon reali zed that he was goi ng to have to get by Mosier in another way . Going past th e me chanics ' signal ing are a Grossi swung wide hoping t o swoop by Ga ylon. But Mosier knows what he 's doi n g and sticks it in tight. Coming down the h ill , Bill is rig ht on his rear . Goin g up the long and dusty uphill, Grossi pulled inside of Mosier and that was it. Mosier closed on Gr ossi several tim es . but he never go t his c hance . At th e finish, DeSte fano had just thr ee and one-half sec on ds on th e h ard charging pai r o f Gr ossi an d Mo sier. Do u g Sherman (Mai) made off with all the coins in the 5 00 class. Sh erm an darte d o ut first with J im West (Mai) righ t behind. Sherman was hot today and he led all the way to the flag. J eff Foland worked up from a fo urth on lap o ne t o sec o n d at th e fin ish . Jim West drop ped back t o fin ish th ird. Jim Weinert was held to 10 th a t th e finish, in part ' due to th e th ick, choking silt that ' plagued several o th er riders throughout the d ay. Jim West vaulted o ut into th e front in m oto two, followed by Dan Turner (Bul) and Doug Sherman. Turner cau gh t a flat rear tire and started slowly dropping back. At exactly the halfway point, West p ulled over be cause his left shoe k was starting to come off. He waited fo r a new shock bolt and watched Doug Sherman inherit h is on ce good lead. Terry Clar k (Hus) was ru n nin g second with Wayne Boyer (CZ) in third. Five laps to go in the race and everything lo o ked good fo r She rman. Do ug wasn ' t so lu cky th ough , as he whacked the fa mily jewels on hi s gas tank and started slowly dropping back. Clark to ok over firs t with Boyer ru n n in g second and Rich Thorwaldson (Mai) in th ird. . At the fin ish it was Clark, Boyer, Thor and a hurtin g Doug Sherman in fourth. He p assed away a few m o nths ago and the Desert Bums M/C held a hare scram bles in his memory. This rac e was the First Annual Dad Bum Memorial and it was befitting th at a Nev ada rider would win. It wasn 't to happen th o ugh , on the ru n to th e smoke bomb Terry Go ugh (Yam) from San Leandro , Califo rnia was there first and no one ev er got near him. Bob Caudle (Hus) who was second overal l said he was glued to Terry 's ba c k wheel for abo ut five miles but when they hit the fast st u ff the Yam ah a dis ap p eared. The co urse was great, eve ry ride r I spoke t o th ough t it was a rider's cou rse and not a horsepower run. Each loop was li ke a well laid o ut en d uro , just when you th ou gh t you we re so tired yo u co uld n't go an y further the cou rse wo uld smooth out and y o u could rest a li ttle, Th e re was very little firero ad .
