The loss of th at check, plus a couple others where check crews for some reason didn't show up , meant that th ere were only three checks in total, whi ch is really too few . There were lots of zeroes in the results (like 54 ). Surprisingly though, fe w people seem ed to mind. It 's a fun run and nobody gets very uptight ab ou t an ything, ex cept maybe cras h ing. Resul ts in Results Section. Gripster IT Scrambles By Maureen Lee PERRIS, CAL ., APR. 13 Th e Gr ipsters were luck y to have a nice day in the middle of this rainy sp ring for their Sunday even t at Perris. The riders turned 30 o ut in good ly numbers; they kn ow th at a club who hosted the Elsinore Grand Prix can put on a go od scramb les an d they weren 't dis appointed. The tr ac k held up v er y well due to so me manicuring by Jerry Burton: Among the ligh t weights, the heaviest turnout was the 125 Novice contingent, and they really put on a show. Gordon Kidd (Yam) had a mi xed luck day . Kidd was tearing along in th e first heat until he fell off but t he effort he mad e to get up to third at th e finis h was a re al one as he chase d afte r Te rry McCreery (In d ) and S. Weisman (Ho n). Second he at victory went to Danny Perkin s (Ho n) who showed he'd be hard to ca tc h co me the main. Th e semi h ad rid ers scrambling hard for those las t transfers. Tom Neider (Ho n) got th e lead but in a bit of over eagerne ss was pass ed by Gordon Kidd and Car l Wh itt (Yam) . Vi nce Landry (Ya m) was right with th e group an d some real dicing wen t o n including one instance o f bumpe r bikes at th e top of the hill. Come the main it was Kidd again haulin g away in the lead with Danny Perkins in hot pursuit. Then came J. Sp eijle ( Y a m) and Vince Lan dry. Landry n ailed Sp eijle who didn 't let it sha ke him in the least and just kep t on going fast an d applying pressure. Landry finally d umped it going up th e hill. Just before th e finish mechanical gremlins lunched Kidd 's ch ain and took th e win away from him. Th e sidehacks like Perris too and a large number decided to co me o ut and give those nice wide turns a go . Before the race , t he Parti/J amison hac k, whi ch really looks the worse for wear, wa s seen towing t he sharp rig belonging to Jerry Person. ' Triumph-powered, th is beas t sp or ts a 13 " auto wh eel and ti re bu t th ey are having troubles ge tting the horses to the ground. Person is planning to try a snow tire next. Anyway, it sure loo ked funny to see Parri's lov able ol d t o a d still cov ere d wi th dirt fro m Ho petown and th e Barstow to Vegas ru n draggi ng th at sani ta ry Triumph on a lo ng rope. The Stevens/Lee Ho nda won all three m o t o s but in th e f in al, th e Wasp/Yamah a o f Monahan/Van Orsdale grabbed the lead only to los e it wh en Stevens shot by them righ t at the st art o f the downhill. Third h ack was Sanner/Sanner on a Ho nda. a team th at reall y worked. It was go od hac k rac ing and a treat for the sp ecta tors. Arthur Junker (Yam) had a nervous moment at the start o f the firs t 250 No vice moto. His ch ain came o ff as he was in the middle of th e pack pouring up the hill. Everyo ne m issed everyo ne else in the ensuing man eu vering b ut quite a few enlarged eyeballs we re in evide nce. It too k a whil e for Junker to get going again, and wh en he di d he got right in fro n t of the firs t pl ace battle be tween Dorothy Rowe and Ivan Oden Jr. At Ascot Jun ker wo uld have been sh own the move over flag, but this is sportsman racing. An yhow, Do ro thy and Ivan had been havin g at it and Dorothy won by only a wh iske r at the finish lin e. I don't know who Do ro th y 's coach is but she 's learned her lessons we ll. h's neat to see a woman who is a top race r, no t just a woman race r and there's a difference. In th e second moto t he battle renewed. Rowe was in fr ont with Oden and Junker on he r heels , th en T . Segale and Brad Wo otten . TIle co n test be t ween t he three leader s in this class was th e best racing o f the day . Dor othy took th at mo to but J u n ker grabbed the lead in the third, foll o wed by Rowe, Od en and Wo otten . After the left hander leading to the d ownhill, Rowe dr opp ed to the insid e but Junker definitely wasn 't go ing to have any of th at and shut the doo r fo rce full y. Rowe j ust gassed it harder on the st ra igh t and passed him. Junker then got off in th e sweepe r and in th e scatt er of every o ne trying to miss him even Od en go t hel d up an d it was Woot en t hat slipped in for seco nd pla ce . The 250 Junior-Exper t race went to Eddie Lawson (Coo) wh o h ad h is han ds full holding off Gary Scadden (Yam ), especially in th e th ird round. Mike TIdwell was ou t of it with me ch an icals early in the program an d the race was be tw een Lawson, Dave J ac kson (Ya m ), Stadden and Ro bert Bird (Yam) . Eddie Bees o n was obviously having some kind of problems but was goi ng very fast at ti mes. This has alway s b een a clas s with m an y riders of n ear eq ual ab ility. They 11 do us proud at the Regio nal Scr am bles October 18th at Tulare. Mo re abo ut that big bash in my colum n , but don't forget the date! Th ere was a better turn out than usu al in the big bore c las s. n ecessitating heats (b el i eve it or n ot ) for th e 500 Junior-Experts. First heat saw Don Grigsby (Yam ) being his usua l fas t sel f cha sed by Steve Miller (Yam) who then man aged to overdo it an d by sliding out lost a tran sfer to the main. There he was doing fin e until his mount sou re d and pu t an end to his day o f racing. Paul Lam bert (Yam) won t he main wit h pressu re fr om the Asco t eq ui pme n t Hale comes from behind to win win in a row. This time amassing 30 . points in one outing and surpassi ng Vince Van Hook (last week 's leader ) by fo ur poin IS, 58-54. This was onl y the second of nine races in the series b ut it already appears that the li g h t w e i gh t Juniors and Intermediates hav e an advantage. Currently ranked third in points, Roy Holsheimer is a 250 Intermediate who also won his second in a row totalling 53 points, one shy o f Van Hook. And th e fact th at the best six rides of the series by each rid er will determine the overa ll cha mp io n means it is go ing to go down to the wire in all classes. Tonigh t , Pessy won th e first 250cc Pr o ro u n d w i th R e x St at e n , ca mpai gning an Ossa for th e first time in his caree r (he had a falling out wi th Maico last week and de cided, eve n th ough it has ' been his best mount to date, to go elsew here) ta king a co me fro m be hin d second, Rex then won the second go ing only because first Pessy killed his engin e while leadi ng , an d th en Val Ta m ietti (1\1ai) lost his inherited lead in the next tum because of a washout. Pe s s y th en wail ed in th e final, grabbed t he lead early and never lost it as Sta ten t ried to stay close but co uld no t find an ad vantage to pass. Tamietti tagge d along in third. The biggest Pro o u t ing were th e 125s with 14 rid ers. TIm Lunde (Ho n) ace d o u t h is bro t her Chu ck (lIon) for th e overa ll. TIm held a distinct advantage as th ey head ed out on the fina l lap of th e th ird round. Sudden ly, he slowed and gave an opening to brother Chuck who took it willingly for th e rno to win . As it turn ed o ut , it was enough for seco nd overall with Don Bongio rno (Ho n) third , t ied with Chuck. Who said th at bro t herly love is extinct ? The 5 0 0 cc Pro clash was again betwee n Bill Rubly [Mai] and J eff J ennings (CZ) in t he p remiere battle for th e Cr.IC No . 1 plate and a new Ford van. Rub ly won all three races for th e easy vic to ry . J ennings took second in the first t wo on ly to crash whil e lead in g the final to win d up third ove rall behind Curt Lessel (r.lai) . • Results in Results Sect ion. By Barney Drake VALENCIA, CAL., APR. 13 When the 250 Pro s roc keted onto the course, Hal Strauss (Mai) and Don Hansen (Mai) immediately began a battle whi ch lasted almost the entire moto. Hansen cap tured an early lead and held back th e fierce Strau ss for a first m o t o victory . In their second moto Strauss took the first chance possible to nab the lead. Hansen was hot on his tracks in second, and Fred Hoblitt (Mon) in third. Hansen was really gassing it but got out of shape an d fell, giving Strauss an unchallenged victory and first overall. Hoblitt took ov er the second po siti on and West Cy cle 's Mike Jenkinson (Hus) filled in the third sp ot. While th is was goi ng on, Han sen had pic ked him self up an d go tt en back to sixth place, giving him enough points to e dg e out Fred Ho blitt for second ove rall . _ Honda mounted Jim Hale did the most spectacul ar riding of th e day. He fell in the start which put him a good distan ce away from the last pl ace rider, bu t th at didn 't stop him. He p icked himself up and took off. It didn 't take him long to pass ha lf of th e field and finish a st rong second. When the sec o nd moto cam e up for the 125 Pros, Hale made sure he wouldn't repeat the mishap of the firs t moto , He go t a good start and filled in the second spot. Tony DeL aTorre was in first place. Hale followed DeLa'Torre for a few lap s and th en made his move and to ok over firs t. DeLaTorre held do wn sec o nd wh ile John Oswald (Ho n] di d the sam e for third. That's how it finished Hale , DeLaTorre and Oswald. AME Injun Deons Mo'Cross By Miles Wervine V ALENCIA, CAL.. APR. 11 Bill Rubly rumbled to another win at Irwindale. Rider turnout for this round of the Friday night A.l\l.E . show at Ind ian Dunes was down som ewh at this week, owing perhaps to co n- et "' J: I"' '" Z '-- J: ...JQ tinuing cold weather or a number of other reasons. Still, there was traction and a chance at trophies and money for those who showed . Rhe Glielmi was the automatic Po wder Puff winner as the only entry , with the Mini Ex pert battle going to Lan ce Sl oan (Yam ) o ver Canadian champion Chris Heisser (Yam). The popu lar 12 5 Beginner class was won by Mike Ab ernathy when leader Bob Mat chett drop ped it while lea ding the fin al moto, Bob Rolli n s ' t wo second place fin ishes were good for fir st overall in the 12 5 Expert race, with Evan Marcus second an d Andy J annings third.
