Th e class was 250 GP, the showdo wn b etw een Bob Endicot t and Ron Pierce, with Harry K1inzmann st ic king a wheel in just to keep it interest ing. Pierce 's Har ley -Davidson suffered from the usual non-fac tory Harley 250 problem , ex cessive chain stretch and resultant sproc ket j umping . Switchi ng from break-p rone 4 28 chain to stronger (b ut not strong enough ) 520 chain in volved cutting and wel ding two differen t size sprocke ts togethe r. The guesswo rk gave Pierce a bike geared so high it would only pull fifth , yet which was still a match for End icott 's G. R.I.P . Yamaha down the front straight . The lead changed constan tly acc ording to the part of the course, and Klinzma nn, in his best-eve r GP ride, kept the pressure on first and second. Pierce had the race under control aft er Endicot t missed a shift on th e seventh lap. Ron wo n by a len gth , with Harry right behin d Endicot t and Whitney Blakesle e a distant fourth, all alon e and in front of the pack. Pat Evans, who reall y scratche d to get around and st ay ah ead 0 f Harry K1in zmann to win 250 GP last week, fin ished fifth today after a race- long battle wi th Larry Koop and Mike • Baeder, Rudy Galindo didn't get to the grid from his warm-up lap in time to get the flag, and so started well behind. He passed seven riders on th e first lap, pitted, ca me back out and mo ved around in the top seven , ma king up for his Yamaha 's bogging out comers with blaz ing speed on the straights.
