Idea l motocross condi tions exi sted : superb traction, hazy- moist skies and te mperatures ranging around 65 d egrees. The racing co nsisted of all classes co mp et ing in two 20 minute mo tos and the pros d ueli ng in two 30 min u te clashes. The Experts too k off in good style with J eff Ward (Han) , the Roger "D" o f mini bikes, winning his class handily and be ating most of the 100cc m achines. Seven teen 12 5cc Expert s lined up for th e start of the first moto and wh en the gate d ropped Gary Denton (DG ) was first off the line fo llo wed closely by Mar k Tyer (Ha n) an d Mark Lawren ce (H a n ) . Th e fir s t five l aps were highlighted by a three man battle fo r th e lead . Finally Tyer too k the lead and grad ually pulled -away fro m t he field w ith Dento n and Lawre nce in hot purs u it. With half a mota remaining, David Williams [Ho n) cam e fro m the middle of t he pa ck to take over seco n d place with Drew Nelson (Han) in third. A great de al of posit ion changi ng ca n take place in 30 mi nutes. Tyer , wh o was br i efl y c h a ll enged in the openi ng moments , too k t he ch ec kere d flag with Williams second and Ne lson third. M ota two was a replay of the first with Williams au d Tyer both exchanging the lea d and William s taking th e honors and th e fi rst place t roph y fo r the day. Tyer finished secon d overal l an d Chuck Lunde (Puc) sna tched third . Jeff Wa rd tu rned in a winning perfo rm ance in the Mini Pro class. Bruce Baron (Yam) grabbed t he hole sho t at the start of t he 250 Expert class. Dave Pessy (Ma n) and Bob Stem (CZ ) were h o t on Baron 's heels until Baro n had trouble ' with the whoopdies and Stem be came t he new lea der . Stem held o n t o (irst w ith Baron ta kin g a "falling-behind" second and J ohn Pe tt y (Mai) handling th ird . M o t a two saw Derha m me r j ust "kicking-ba ck," pulling away fro m the other riders with Scott Gilm an (CZ) in pursuit. Derhammer too k the cigar and first place fo r the day with J .
