Scott Boek (Hon) took the top position when onl y half the original field appeared for the muddy second moto . Jay Van Camp (Hon) was second overall and Gary Goforth (Su z) fin ished third. Mike Harnacker (Su z) wired the 100 class with wins in both motos, followed by Mike Gosselaar in second and Tom Smi th third. Doug Taft (Hon) also aced both m o to s to win the 12 5 class , with Ri chard Titus and Glenn Hammon putting their Hondas into sec ond and third. Harnacker came back to win the 250 Junior event ab oard a CZ, followed by Craig Lauterman (Su z) and Mike Misik. All t he Expert classes ran to gether, and Mike Lacy put his Husky 250 in to first overall after Ru ss McAfee (Bul ) stalled his ma chine while leading the deciding moto, Third overall and first 125 was Bill Barlow (Hon) followed by Tom Barnett (Hon). The Old Timers provided the day 's most entertaining racing as they tried various approaches to navigating the slimy goop. First Expert was George Mey er (Mai) as B1ackie Lewis (Mai) and Don .Carey (Ossa) raced in fr ont of th e Master field , with Lewis taking the overall victory. John Webb headed the Am ateur division , followed by Bill Bird (Ya m) and J ack Hurley. Friday at the Dunes By T od Rafferty v ALENCIA, CAL. , APR. 4Another wind-chilled evening at Indian Dunes provided fine course cond itio ns for the 150 riders who appeared for the regular A.M.E. Friday night motocross. Morning rains h a d softened th e entire tr ack and pr ovided he aps of berm -building material. Rid ers from Revell 's Two-Stroke again dominated the 250 Expert class , but this time Will Harper (CZ) was second to teammate Don Hansen on a Maico . Tom Claire (CZ) , riding for NBR En gineering, took home top bucks in the 500 Expert class followed by Randy Stubbs (Bul ) and Penton rider Chris Bartlett. First 125 Expert was Andy J annings (Ho n ) and Tom Zahnter (Hon) finishing second. Mark Bear too k first 250 J unior as Lloyd Baland and Gary Scardina finished one-two in the 500 division. Tim McWhorter, his first time out since his broken leg , gave it his best shot bu t Nan cy stood her ground with Tim having to settle for second. Dennis Aguirre alw ays a front runner was in for third. Tim did have his moment of glory on the IT with Denny Aguirre making him work for every piece of it . It was a see-saw battle with Tim c o ming from behind b ut winning it nevertheless. Denny had to settle for second. Meanwhile , on a d ry, slick half-mile , Dan McWhorter was doing some wild things in the 750cc Expert go. Dan laying ba ck aro u nd th ird found himself a hole and took his best shot, which wasn't to o shabby co nsidering it put him first where he and Jim Wright co mm enc ed to show the folks what crossing up and power sli di ng is all abou t . They were close enough to shake hands co m ing out of the turns b ut McWhorter's bike seemed to have more power when they hit the st raigh ts and that wa s the telling factor. M ike Tidwell is a name that is be coming well known in racing circles as he co n tinu es to turn in outstanding performances week after week. The y o ung 14 -year-old picked up three firsts a nd one second Wednesday . Mike claimed firsts in both IT and half-mile in th e 125cc Expert class, rested one race , came b ack and won the 250 Expert single with a good m argin over Eddi e Lawson and Bob Graves, and went b ack to the line immediately for the 250cc Expert Twin go. It was here he en count ered a fir ed up Craig Armstrong who pulled out all the stops and took some very daring chances to win the class, handing Mike his only second of the night. Randy Roderick was third . The 250cc Novice class saw some new faces up front. Wiley Miller, who hasn 't been out for a long time, showed everyone he hasn 't lost his touch as he worked his way through the pack for the win . Jim Roach and John DeBruyn were second and third. On the half-mile it was Dylan Neih art wh o got out fast and ' put a lot of daylight between himself and th e res t of the pa ck for the win . Wiley Miller w orked his wa y up to tak e second and Dave Anderson was third. Dan Davis an d Eddie Drake shared ' the 125cc No vice win s with Eddie also sharing t he 100cc Novice goes with Justin Vau ghn.
