CRC Gringo Enduro By Larry Langley CALIFORNIA CITY, CAL., APR. 13 CRC 's Grin go Enduro started o ff pleasan tl y enough . The tame first loop wound through the rolling hills and finished in the flat terrain just East of the pit area at Park C. There wasn't much to write home about on the first loop (which is the way it's supposed to be at a family type enduro) but rea ms of paper could be consumed about t he second. Interesting? You bet? Challenging? And then so me . Difficult ? Unfortunately yes. Sigh . . . The res u lts speak for themselves. The top five were all Open A class riders. It was th at type of course. The A riders really d ug it. The B riders th ough t it was very challe n gin g. The others, well I can't print wh at they were saying. There is a fin e line in m aking a family endur o inter esting and ch allen gin g without being too hard. Jerry McNeal laid out wh at I thought was an outstanding District 37 enduro loop but frankly it was too tough for a lot of th e riders. Some uphill ridges developed in t o some bad bottlenecks on the lat er nu mbers. To cap thing s off was a downhill of genuine abso lu t e pucker power. Mo re t han one rider looked ove r the edge an d muttered " 1 ain't riding down THAT!" and rode off looking fo r ca mp. The brave took some deep breaths, closed their eyes, p lunged over the ed ge and tr ied to -inch th eir way d ow n . Ther e were some rather spectacular crashes, but mo st were just dump-it-over and slide-down type. One poor soul t ho ught he'd just rid e it down and ru n it out when he fo u nd himself heading for some rocks. He hit the fro nt brake a nd promptly did o ne o f the most ferocious looking cras hes I h ave ever wi tnessed. CRC should have put in a hard way /easy way there. Many riders who just ride fa m ily enduros have never experienced that severe of a downhill. It doesn't help to have friends tell them th at it 's a ty p ical District 3 7 type h ill. It was hairy in any type of enduro . The loop was super fas t - 2 1 and 24 MPH all the way . It was hump time with very litt l e timek eeping . One rid er c o m m en te d &I] sure wasted m y time making up a ro ute chart for t he second loop " , _ A lack of che c ks d idn 't help m atters any. CRC, being a promo ter, has a problem in th at they have to hire all their help. It's a problem getting these pe~I~ ' ~o. ' , t~~ir ' c ~e,f kL ~~ ich .th e,>; haven't seen before. Three chec k cre ws didn't m ake it to their checks. CRC had some real n ice finisher pins to try and placate t he finishers. There were a n aw ful lot of riders c om ing in way late. They wer e just happy to ~ fin ish. Larry Twait of th e Bar Benders M/C won first overall unofficially , riding his new Bulta co Frontera. He seems to lik e it. Larry lost just six seconds at the tiebreaker. Not too sh abby. If you were unhappy with the to ugh ness of the course don 't despair. CRC will tame it down fo r th e next one. They went a little overboard but a trophy in th is o ne wil l m ean so mething. Yo u very definitely earned it. • Unofficial Results 1. Larry T wa lt :0 6 (O pen A ) 2 .
