I n t h e : f irs t mot a Graft on was challenged briefly for the lead by Jeff Vidic (Mai) who soon drop pe d back into second place. Gr aft on led the sec on d mota fro m start to finish. Bo b Han nah fin ished in second af ter battling hi s way up fr om fourth pl ace . J eff Vidic rode on to take third . Danny LaPorte fle w " the Franks" to an overall win . He started th e first rnoto by passing Marty Moates (Ha n) on the first lap. Mo ates re gained the lead on th e same lap and started to pull away. Marty's ride ca me to an abrupt end when his ch ain bro ke. Billy Urban (WT E) had mo ve d in to second and then took ove r first position. Billy had a good le ad when his engine ble w up . LaPorte then took off, mo ved into first place and held on to it fo r th e win. Mart y Moates was o ut in front in the second mo ta whe n he and his chai n parted co mp an y agai n. Ro n Haase (Mai) was firs t to the flag in the co mb ined 125-250-500 Expert r ra ce to collec t fi st 500 pri ze m oney. Mike Todd, who app are n tly knows the Vallev circuit like th e back o f his hand, put ;{ OSSA Phantom in fro nt of th e n o ther 250s for cas h while Tom Zahnter led a Honda swe ep of th e 125 ca tego ry ah ead of Jim Hal e and Bo b Garra b ran t. Al s o n ot able was a turnout of side h acks sufficient to make it a race an d to run both Lightweigh t (unde r 5 00) a n d H eavyweight (o ver 500 ) classes. The Lucchese /Mo rgan Yamaha finished on top of the fann er while, true to form , a Palfreyman /Gardner Wasp was first he avy three-wheeler o n a circuit that En glishman John kn ows well . The las t race a f th e day was an easy win fo r Bill Hage n. He built up a 35 seco n d lead with a fas t 380 CZ over seco n d 500 Ju nior Chris Alberts o n ano ther not-so-slo w machine : A 360 Husq varna GP replica. Surprisingly, it looked like several of th e 45-minute goes were decided by wh o got th e good starts. Either it was a select gro up of sports me n racers at Valle y or SoCal riders are getting be tter at the longer m o t o s , M o st c l a ss e s were eve nly m atch ed.
