An d as always, sinc e the very first race of th e year, Trudy Beck and her 175 Penton were first Powder Puff. Dennis McLaughlin tried out the 250 class this weekend, which must ha ve been to his liking, as he was first Amateur aboard his Elsin o re. Mike Merrick rode his new mono-shock for the first time and might be quite hard to catch when he gets back in shape, taking second 250 Amateur. Rocky Dellegatte rode one of those new Desert Phantom Ossas and chased Merrick's dust for third. Gre g Tucker, Jim Harrison, and George Harvey III were the top three Open Am ateurs. Mark Granger was leading the Novices through the pits but had some problems on the second loop. He lost the lea d to George Tuiles of the Stumpjumpers, Carl Messenger also got by for second overall Novice, while Granger took third, first Open No vice. Several riders ha d a hard time m aking it over th e hill, with the Novic es lift ing it on th eir first loop at the same time th e Am ateurs / Experts wer e on th eir seco nd because of the delayed start . In fact Ro n Wrigh t was to th e check t wo on th e sec o n d loop b efore the Novices • even got th ere the firs t tim e. Results in Results Section. All gave fair wa rn ing th ey would be b ac k next week running strong. Rick Bird , a regular th at was lo ng overdue made his entry into the winner 's circle with a splash taking both short and half-mile wins in the Open Novice classes. Dennis Aguirre the rider he 's been having to chase all these many weeks got a taste of what it 's like an d Rick did it with a machine that was running far fro m par. Mark Scoggins captured the only other double win in the 100cc Novice Short Track an d combined 100-125 Novice Half-mile and h as just ab o ut ridden himself into an Amateur rating which will have him pitted against his older brother. His half-mile win was a real battle . with . Riverside . riders Fred Conover an d Davi d J on es pressing h im every inch o f the way loo king for th e m istake t h at n ever came. Fred dy Conover on his hot set up Kawasaki minicycle did win th e 12 5cc Novice Sh ort Track an d again it was David Jones apply ing the pre ssure but ' he co uld do no better th an seco nd. The Ascot boy s showe d up and did thcir th ing in the Op en Expert goes wit h the likes of Charl es Soderst rom , Brian Garcia. Mike Th om sen . Paul Lamber an d Terry Grinner o n ha nd. Soderstrom to o k th e Ope n Short Track win with Lambert getting the 35 0cc Expert nod . CAL. . 1>IA R. 9 En route to a sweep ing dominat ion o f the 500 Expert class in an AME 5600 purse motocross at Indian Dunes. Motocross Nat io nal :\0 . 84, Bry ar Holcomb went down in the sjart hill tu rn on a European-sty le changing tr actio n tr ack . Holcomb had jus t passed his main co mpe titio n , Lu ke Messer (Mai). in the sec o nd moto (afte r winning the first combined 25 0-50 0 Expert round of 30 minu tes] and was on his way to being S I 00 richer when an injury that may prove disastrous to his seaso n plan s struck. Messer went on to co llec t his seco n d S I 00 increment from AME in a wee k as he had litt le tr ouble st aying w a y a h e a d of the remaining 500 Experts. Billy Payne, noted SoCal hotshoe no w riding a 250 CZ after years on a Maico, had to work considerably h arder fo r his C-note as Will Harper, Al\IE No . One led the 250s until mechanica ls put him 0 u t in th e first moto. After H o lc om b 's unhappy demise in th e second rnoto , Payne had to wo rk fro m ab ou t sixth up to second behind Tra cy Oswell (Pen ). Even his second place , good en ough fo r th e over all top dol lar, was threatened until the last lap, as Gary Hymes in his firs t ride fo r Montesa wo rked up to a passi ng position on Payn e several ti mes o nly to finish thi rd.
