It was a little nostalgic, but no less unfair, to see the Experts trying to outcreep each other and force the starter . . . just like the old days of maybe three years ago . We still favor st eel gates for their impersonal consistency in motocross starts. It sometimes tak es a motocross like th is one to remind everybody who isn 't a pro just how lo ng a mota of 25 minutes plus one lap on a rough . bumpy , vert ica l track can really be . Blast ing to the head of a more t han 20·bi ke field, Whitney led all the way, despi te strong braking ch allenge s from Wes Cooley. The likeable Blakeslee. who raced the same bike in both 250 and 350 Junior events at Daytona by switching barrels ba ck an d forth during the week. got his lap . times down to 2: 14 at one point in the contest. " G o o d times, th at 's the most important th ing," observed Whitney with a giant ear-to-ear grin after the finish. "It wasn't a st ar-studded field." The rea so n Whitney co uld say such a thing was a series of fre ak accid ents that eliminated two top contenders before the second tum of th e first lap. Bob Endico tt, famou s for his knee-dragging and lo ng braid trailing out fro m un der his helmet , broke his chain on the warm-up lap . AFM Nu mber One Ru dy Galin do seized his Posa Fuel/Dura Lube Yamaha in tum one of the first lap . Galindo did manage a second in 350 GP, co m ing in well behind Dick Fuller 's ro cketship Yamaha, on the sam e engine he us ed to fini sh 35th Expert at Daytona, first 35 0. "Daytona killed my motor, " he claimed later. Reg Pri dm ore won the Open Production, seemingly toying with his " co mpet it ors. " For m ost of the race the order was Pridmore (BMW 900), Pat Beacom (Kaw 900). John MacD onald (Kaw 900), and Jeff Steele (Han 750). The distan ce between first p lace and the pair of Kaws fighting for second varied constantly, but at the white flag . Pridmore had five seconds o n Beaco m, (MacDo nald had quit with proble ms). O n e lap later, the checkered flag . Pridmore ha d 20 seconds, an d Ste ele had not cl osed up on Beacom. In fact. hard charging Scott Clough, on his Norris Cam Honda 500, who had mo ved up steadil y on Steele. out braked and drove underneath Steele in the last co mer of the last lap, beating him across th e finish line in a burst of " on the gas at the right time in the righ t place " power . Since the 750 an d 500 cla sses were scored apart fro m t he Open class, St eele an d Clou gh b o th " won. " Clough did n ot win his usual class, 3 5 0 Product ion . In fact. he ' neve r started, d ue to engi ne pro blems. Bob Tigert, his arc h rival. did start, bu t did n't win, either. After a terrific yo u-p ass-me-I 'Il-pass-you race, AMA Expert Wes Cooley beat Novice Tigert , who won the class at Dayto na . Tigert's pal J ac k Bake r b orrowed a Lave rda 1000 and won Super Street,
