Th e t ra ck was run ba c kwa rd and included so me new hil l-climbin g jumps an d a few down hill drop-off's. Th e usu al lo ng downhill became a power-sapping uphill fo r many, especially for 125 riders. An expec ted battle b etween Ron Self (Mon] an d Neil McDonald (Y ZM) in th e 250 Pro clas s neve r dev eloped be cause both riders ex perience d bike problems an d b o t h went o ut on th e second lap o f th e first m oto. Du an e J o ice (Bul) who was running th ird was n ow th e n ew leader. J.P. Morgan (Pen) was ho t on J oi ce 's fender in second . Also com ing u p st ro ng ly was Ric k Varr el (B us), slowly closing in on Morgan. Further back another ho t duel was shaping up fo r fourth place between J erry Welry (Mai) , Bill J o hnso n (YZ:>.I) an d Lo ren Hall (Hus). Th ese three riders really were app l yin g t h e pressure, each wa t ching t h e o ther guys' moves. Up fro nt J o ice h ad gained a few seconds on second p lace man Morgan . Morgan was havin g trouble with Ric k V arr ell who was literally breathing do wn his nec k. Varrell ca me out the victor and started out afte r Joice but was too la te. Lo re n Hall emerged with f ourth p lace after his battle with J o hnson and Wel ty. Neil McD on ald grabbed the lead aga in in the seco n d moto. Du an e J oice an d his p al J .P . Morgan had another fight going for second pl ace. Me Do nal d fell vict im t o a sp uttering ignition agai n . Coming up from way back in the pack was St eve S c offone (Mo n ) who soon go t by Morgan, who was steadily dropping back. Sco ffone st arted working up to J oice and so o n passed th e Bultaco rid er. L or en Hall was up in third spot. Scoffo ne finishe d t 1th in the first m oto an d with a large lead he won th e second m oto to give h in fifth overall . Duane J o ice p icked up a coo l $ 15 0 for hi s win in th e class with second going to a consist en t Lo ren Hall . P e t er Bi erwit h (Bul) an d J ohn Garbarino (Mo n) d o min ated th e ac tion in t h e fi r s t m o t o of the 250 Intermedi at e class. Bierwith pull ed the stops o u t and shot into t he lea d , not far behind was Garbarino o n a ne w YR. Gar barino started the long, slow game of ca tc hing up to Bierwi th . "Garb" closed in a t about t he hal fwa y poin t and shot by to ta ke the lea d and t he win. Pet er Crowell fin ish ed th ird o n a YZ. ' Peter Bier with agai n ro cketed to the lead in th e seco nd rnoto wit h J o hn Garba rino an d Peter Crowell running two an d three res pe ctive ly . It looked like Bierwit h would ge t th e win with th e big lead th at he had , b ut co m ing up fas t was Dan Brevn es (Mai], who fini sh ed se ve n th in th e firs t m oto . Brevn e s wo rked past Garb arino an d set out a fte r Bierwith . It d idn 't tak e Brevne s lon g to ca tc h up . He soon go t by and finished with a sizeable lead. Overall Bierwith go t th e nod for first with Peter Crowell p icking u p second for his three-three score. Gary Lon g (YZM) a local rider from the Sa n dh ill area gave Dick Mann (BSA) a run for h is money in th e 500 Pro class. Long sh o t into t he lea d in m oto o ne and from th ere on it wa s ca l a n d m ouse with Dick I\lann all the way to th e fin ish. Several tim es Mann closed in on Long but he never co uld seem to ge t by . T racti o n's th e word as J .P. Morgan , Dave Robinso n , an d R ick Varrell hit the ju m p-t urn on Sand Hill's rerou ted course. Il "! Bill J ohnson (Yam), ridin g in his secon d 25 0 Pro race, ro cketed to a q uick lead in the fi rst m oto. J eff Le ever (Mai ) was ridin g in second and Mike Middle ton (Pen ) was ru nnin g third. Middleton soon go t by Lee ver and was now chasing J o hn so n. Mike took ab out two lap s be fo re he cou ld get by . Mid dle ton had it fair ly easy un til R on Self. up from his u su al "fair" start had sta rted to close in . It d idn' t take Self t oo long to put his Selby Mo t o rs I\lontesa into the lead. Bill J oh n son again showed his talent fo r judging the ru b ber band as he shot into anothe r im pressive le ad in moto tw o . Ro n Self di dn 't mess around this m ot o a nd fo und his way aro und John son i n r el a t ively short time. Johnson hung on t o finish second ove rall, n ot bad fo r his second Pro ra ce. Brian Cre ws (Hon) threw a wrench into th e 125 In termedi at e racing circle . Cre ws, a pe re nnial fou rth and fifth place fini sher put all his stu ff t ogether t o win th e class with th ree-one score . Usu al top runners were down wi th m echanicals an d c ra s h e s, due in part to th e tremendous dust. Robert Pachal (Hon) ran a strong race taking seco n d overall, whil e Chuc k Cummings, a newcomer t o Sunnyvale, had his Bultaco wound o ut and finished third. _ Results in Results Se cti on. Up the long sta rt hill Long again found th e fast lin e and was leading the second moto with Mann back in about fourth . When th ey ca me aro un d th e mountain o n the other side o f the trac k, Mann had taken over the lead. Dick h ad somehow gotten by the fir st three riders in on e swoo p . Several lap s later Cast illo was out wi t h a blown motor. Bob Geffert (Hon) was o n his way up and so on go t by Ro bis on . Geffert was now af t er Stanle y an d he shot by th e Honda rider in a short time . Geffert stretched out his lead with R obison di sp lacing Stanley for the second spot. Mike Am aral (Suz ) also was playing th e ca tc h up ga me , up from dead la st, soon c ha lleng ing Robison for seco nd place. Am aral fin ally shot by R obison a fter som e he ctic racing t o finish sec o nd . Dave R obison, ridin g a 125 Suzu ki su spe nde d with gas shock s an d fo rks from Mag-A1u RI D, h ad a little troub le in th e fir st 125 Pro moto with his ex pe rimental forks but got ev erything di aled in fo r the second moto. Ge tting th e p rov erb ial hole sh o t Ro bison vaulted into a fantastic lead. S teve Gre wer (H o n ) was holding down sec ond. Mike Am aral fel t it was tim e to make his m ove , he start e d workin g up slowly at first ge tting by Grewer. Am aral nex t started to w o rk on Dave R ob inson ' s seven-sec o n d lea d. Af te r reall y closing in on Robiso n, Amaral's sp ar k plug ca p worked loo se, an d he stopped n ot knowing what the problem was . Rob ison looked lik e a su re w in n er, but Ron Se lf was also o n the way up . Self had broken his chain in th e first ยท m ot o and decided to race the second fo r fu n an d practice . Self cut seconds off of each of Robi son 's laps an d by th e t ime th e last lap flag came o ut Self coul d now start eatin g Ro bison ' s dus t. Almost all the spe ctators kn ew it wo uld co me d own to th e flag an d every one m ade a b ee-lin e fo r th e fin ish line . Co ming into the sharp turn below the annou nci ng t ow er Robison an d Sel f wer e wide op en . Robison d ived in low an d Self decided to go high, th ey co llided and Sel f h igh -sid ed. Robison wa s unaffected by all this bum p ing and jetted to the fin ish lin e. Self go t back up and fin ish ed second. (Me, I was ma d, I had j ust miss ed shooting one of the best finishes a t a Sunnyv ale race. ] Later it was a very ela te d Robison wh o said, "my new fo rks worked gre a t the whole way. " Ro n Se lf (Mo n ) made up fo r th e 125 Pro race by b lowing off the 25 0 Pros for th e fourth week in a row. Joh n Gug lielm etti: Look ba ck o nly AFTER you' ve won. Ro binson (Ya m) bange d and sh oved his way to first in th e 3 60 main event with relative ease. He and his Boss fra med Ya maha survived the first co rn er congestio n t o inherit the lead over Jeff Sieric k (Tri) and fir st heat winner J oe Divecchio ( Y am ). Two lap s later, Ro binson was sa fely in t he lead b ut Sierick had falle n, causin g Divecch io also t o crash. This gave second and third to Cycle Fac tory 's Greg Ferguson and Steve Diet z (Bul ). Die tz trie d in vain to get by Ferguso n b ut Ferguson held him. Greg was lu cky to get secon d as he had to o verco me m an y pro blems t hat he had tonigh t, such as poor tractio n , a pi nched tu be , and a sta rt in his heat from th e penalty lin e. l\lany Expert riders were up set abo ut th e size o f the p ayback (75 %) so befo re th e start of t h e Ex pe rt m ain events, the offic ials decided to ra ise th e cash to a better 100% giving the riders a few more doll ars to race for. J o hn Gu glielmetti (Yam) didn't mind this de cision as he to ok th e lead at the drop of the green flag an d held on until th e finish to win th e 25 0 Exp ert class.
