On the 35th lap Vanderpool cut this to three riders -by lapping Marshall Bird, the co-rider with Kelley. Vanderpool's problems were coming, as on the 53rd lap he stopped for some new goggles and saw Silva go by with o nly ab out 20 minutes left in th e event. Vanderpool chase d th e Bultaco rider very hard an d in six laps was breathing do wn his tailpipe. Eating awa y the seconds in th e rough stuff and holding his own o n the smooth , the ride-to-work 350 X L was holding ou be tter than average. The new gras sy spot seemed to be where Vanderpool had th e a dva n ta ge and on th e 59 t h lap he cau gh t up and was ready to put on th e pass wh en he felt the rear whe el start to deflate. Keep an eye on this one, he finished second in his very first race as a Novice sportsman. 250 Experts put on the big show, with David Burton on a Gringo, John Green on a Honda an d J eff Stadel on Ya maha trading places in the lea d th ro ugho u t the race. Stadel slipped o ut of the tires on the last lap an d was disq ual ified, giving third to Bill Bisel on a Su zuki. Bret Stadel won his first Junior race on a 360 Yamaha and Joe Hale (Yam), John Gre en (Yam), an d J erry Bland (Bul) put it on the 3 60 Expe rt s. The Op en Experts gave a touch of nostalgia as Charley Stewart hel d off th e pack on his " big iron " Norton. The Old Timers put on a duel and even passed a co up le of th e' 200 Novi ces they were combined with . Gordon Banserner diced with te ammat e Bob Lamb throughout th e race until, at the last lap, with Lamb stuck in traffic, Banserner jumped ahead to win as first Old TImer. The day was a su ccess for St . Joseph 's church and a great opener for a sea so n of racing in Auburn. • I It w a s j ust o ver a m ont h s ince the la st o f the Troy D urham Benefit M a rathons a n d t he two wee ks of no r ain h ad dried out the shallow water holes and even made the high spots dry an d dusty. With Daylight t ime in ef fect , the minis ran their p ra ctice in th e dawn 's early light , th en ra n a 4 5-mi nu te even t wit h but 11 entries. Once agai n t he sh o w was a figh t for first be tween Mike Sprenge r an d Rick Delon g. Just before the start Delo ng t rie d warming up his X R-75 and it di d n't so und so good so he we n t to his other XR -75 , the old reliabl e, an d started with it . At the 'go it was Sprenger with a good lead while Delong had to wo rk hard to ove rcome a poor start. J e rr Halloc k led out th e 125 class with every int ention of winning as before but ha d to co n te nd wi th an old hand at th e ga me. Former Na tio nal Scrambles Champ ion Paul J oh nson and his brothe r Cam m came out of semi -retirement to run a n ew CR 125 Honda and take h om e the big brass. The first 40 minutes was a five way ba ttle for the front spot alt hough the lead only changed when J o hnson pitted for an early an d cos tly gas stop . At the Johnson gas sto p J o hn Hall took ove r the lead but gave that up to Halloc k with in two laps, then dr op ped o ff th e pace when he gave wife Irene the controls. Hallock led for another 10 laps only to lose to the overpowering ability of the Johnson boys. A sm all cro wd o f 21 teams lined up for the 250cc bash le d off by Pat Lawler. The newly cut grassy strip must have confused Lawler as he returned to the :.IX part of the course by a new route and took along the pack as he we nt . . Silva and b ro ther 1\im Navarro never relinq uished th e lead although both Simmons and Taylo r trie d to catch the I\lartin Cycle Ossa. The Spa rro w /Will is Honda held o n to second until th e 42nd lap and then gave up th e chase . Adding so me flat trac k Experts and a fe w lo ng dista nce guys to th e usual Open class cre w ca me up with a total of 26 st ar ters. At the go it was short track specialist Bob Scally holding o ff Paul Schwafel wit h J ohn Silva on board a new 250 Pursang over Blue Plater Bru ce Kell ey. Leaving late fr om the line was Gary Van derp ool on the so rta trick 35 0 XL fro m PoP Ken y on 's. On the fifth lap Scall y pulled in to rebend a ben t brake arm. " Minis, both J un io r and Senio r, used only a p ortio n of t he b ig track and so me still bogged o ut. One p oo r little guy reall y go t sucked down; he was too mu ddy to get a number but it req uired Dad an d t wo flagmen to get th e bike ou t of it s hole. The 100 Kids clas s, all th ree divisio ns, were ru n together with a fin e ride by 13·year-old Kevin Anderson of Rogue R i v er . Al though riding . a s an Intermediat e , Kevin too k the chec kered flag ahead of the pack, not bothered a bit by th e mud. The 125s we re run by class (lunio r, In termediate and Senior) . The Juniors boasted 15 of the 35 entries wi th spill-a-minute action. Rid ers rimme d and sp lattered, lost chain s, over-sh ot be rms , and one guy lost a n engine. Co uldn't help but notice o ne flyin g rider, In termedi a te Bob Connors, fr om Gran ts Pass. Th is is hi s first full season at m otocross ; he st arted out as aJunior an d the Expe rts had be tter watch put. T he ve ry ca pab le ana ' witty (?) an nouncer, Mr. Tyrrell Hart , noted th at th e 250 Expert class c ould be ca lle d th e " Yamaha Race " because all but on c o f th e 10 bikes were Yamahas. The " Crash and Burn" trophy went to Mark Mathieson who just happened down after th e starting whoop-de-does and was promptly run over, in the first seconds of the Open clas s ' second moto.
