The desert sand, usu all y soft an d dusty , was hard an d da mp, supe r traction ! The first loop sta rted us out at 18 mi les an hou r and inc reased up to 2 ] miles an ho ur wi th in fo ur miles. Th e te rrai n o n th e first loop was rel ati vely easy, keep in g wi t h th e "Fam ily End uro" concep t. TIle A an d B rid ers sh ouldn't have any trouble with this lo op unless th ey ge t to having too m u ch fun an d forget t o look a t th eir speedo , as I did. Ab out 28 miles o ut I was hav in g a ba ll sh ooting be rm sh o ts in a serpentine canyon, wh en up jumps a well -h idden ch ec kp oint , Result, o ne m in u te ear ly an d two points lost. The loop co n tin ued on smooth winding fire roads and big whoop-de-dood sandwash to the fin ish . The whole loop was 4 3 miles - a long first loop, but no one was co m plain ing. Abo ut halfway th rough th e loop, there was what CRC called a " goa t trail." It was cu t out of the side o f the mo untain an d was less t han one foot wide in most p laces. Wit h a wall on the right and a sheer drop o n the left , J inched my wa y d o wn for ove r half a mile. Fortunately, the sp eed average was o nly six mi les pe r ho ur. Eve n so , it's ha rd to go only six mp h, as I fo und o ut when [ ca m e into the chec k ea rlv, Another two points los t! T ricky , C Rt:. Near th e end of th e lo op . we ran thro ugh th e bes t p art o f the course . It was a b o u t five m il es o f uphill s, downhills, an d a lo t of t igh t little co mers. About fo ur miles in, they had th e tie-b rea ker. 1 rode m y tail o ff an d st ill ca m e in three minutes late. At th e fini sh, I was still one minute late. CRC notified us th at the tie-breaker clo ck o n loo p two was off m ore than the 20 sec o n ds allo wable , resulting in this chec k being thrown o ut .
