Rich Grafton (Yam ) took th e big purse in the 250 Pro Class. Rich won the firs t 250 Pro Div. I qualify ing moto while Mike St eams (Mon] won the second qualifier by just barely beat ing Billy Clements (Hus) . Bo b S t em ( C Z) r o de in front throughout th e first 250 Pro Div. II moto, Davey Carlson (Mai) followed. Bob Hannah (Hus) won the second Div. II moto after Davey Carlson fell wh ile leading at the finish line. In the final 250 Pro moto Rich Gr aft on t o ok off and was never challenged . BiIIy Clemen ts was seco nd an d Bo b Hannah th ird. Wayne Boy er (CZ) wo n the 500 Pro Class for th e second week in a row. ' Bo ye r had led the first m o to but finished second af ter Frank Fitzgeral d ( H us ) passed him on the downhill st raight. BiII Rubly (Mai) fin ished th at race third. Terry Clark (Hu s) won the seco nd 500 Pro moto. Clark got by Boyer, who again ended second with Rubly on ce again in third p lace. Williams took the overall victory in the 125 Pro class today. Moto one he ca me out of fo urth place to take the first "in fr om Mike Bell (Hon). In the se cond leg Rick Sheren (Hon ) led Williams and Marty Moates (Hon ), who. both go t by Sheren and went on to b at tl e for the win . Many passed William s and was opening up a huge lead when his engine seized. Tim Lunde (Hon) then ca me o ut of the pack and took t he lead away from WiIIiams. Lunde finis he d first b ut Williams took second an d the overall win . 1 ~ . Res ults in Resul ts Section . MX points race tight By John Bethea IRWINDALE , CAL.. MARCH 14 Th e race for season championship rem ains very tight a fter tonight's CMC mo to cross at Irwindale Raceway, and only 15 points separate the to p two in th e standings. BiII Ru bly (Mai) edged ou t J eff Jennings (CZ) in th e race fo r third in the 500cc Pros and in the process h eld on to his slim lead for CMC Number On e. Joe Johnston (Mai) took top hon o rs with a second in the fir st round an d then ca me back with a pair of wins to be at Luke Messer (Mai ) in the pay line. Val Tamietti made it two wins in a row with h is victory in the tough 250cc Pro class . Tough is an un dersta tement. Going into the final rac e he was tied with Dave Pessy [Mon) and Jeff Vidie (Mai) for the lead. The gate fell and Val (Mai) go t the inside line for the first · tu m and then spen t the next 4 .9 laps holding off the continue d attemp ts by Vi dic to get b y . On pape r, it ap peare d tha t it woul d be easy for Tamietti as both Vid ic and Pessy were havin g p ro blems with th eir m a ch ines. Pessy 's rear sho cks were bottoming o ut and lo cking up . Vidic, m e anwhil e, w as tearing down his transmission between each round and gea rs co n tinue d to lo ck up . The 125 cc Pros were to pped by little David Taylor. By watching the second an d th ird rounds, though, one would have sworn that Gary Denton was the rider to beat. As it turned out, before winning the final pai r, Denton co uld o nly take a six th in th e initial face off and it cost him the ove rall victo I)' . Jim Domann was th ird and Mike Bell was fourth . That fourth pla ce moved Mike Bell into t hird in the season p oin ts race , but still more than 10 0 markers be hind Rubl y. Rich Grafto n (who does n ot ride at nigh t), is n o w fourth.
