Valley
OORPARK, CAL., MAR. 9
After a few days of heavy rain, the
scramble was almost cancelled.
From the low turnout it was
obvious that many riders must
have thought so. The Hilltoppers were
there in full force and the riders who
did come had a ball, ReaIly a fun d ay, .
elaxed and low keyed.
Only three minis showed up, one
didn't survive practice, so the other two ,
ohn Murphy and Eddie Tafoya, ran
with the up-to 125 Novices. Tom Neidei
(Hon) flat got with the pro$"'m as the
saying goes. He was way out in front
causing a bit of co nste rn atio n as he
signed in as a p ie plate. After a chat
with t h e referee it was determined that
he was legally a 0-3 i Novice and wasn't
disqualified, but from that riding
erformance alo ne he won't be one
long.
Dua ne Howard (Kaw) emerged
second and Gary Lu dwig (Yam) fo urth
with J o hn Murphy (Yam) in third. He
and Eddie Tafoya (Hon) gave n ot an
inch to the "big bikes" they were
running with. They had their own race
going. TI,e mud caused some problems
for Tafoya who flopped twice but while
he was up" and running he and Murphy '
were enjoying themselves.
The Junio r-Expert 125s ran together
due to the shortage of entries. Steve
Woskoski (Yam) got way out in front
the first moto , followed by a gang of
oth er Ya mmies ridden by Eddie
La wson, Mike Tidwell and Charles
Summers. Second m o to it was Mike
Tidwell into the lead , with Lawson and
Woskoski hard after. They mixed it up
very well in that round and it was
Woskoski again in the third, followed by
Lawson, Summers and Tidwell.
. TI,e 250 Expert class was Tidwell's.
He wo u ld hop off his 125 and scurry for
his 250 waiting at the line. Ah youth!
Behind him in the first round Steve
Fortune and Johnny Sprague on their
Buis were flat having it. At t imes they
were side by ' side in the turns and
Sprague 's fa ceshie ld was liberaIly
co vere d with mud. For that matter,
Fortune was pretty grubby looking too.
On the next to last lap Fo rtune's hand
ca me up. He had to pull off at the top
of th e hill by tum one · with his bike
seized.
The sec on d moto had T id we ll and
Sprague going at it while Steve worked
on his bike. He was back again for the
' last moto and the fight commenced
again. It was ·s uper ! At one point the
three of them were playing "waltz me
around again Willie" on the left before
