-- 32 rough mi le-and-one-eigh th track at Paradise Haven, just outside Anchorage proper. Soil type was the Alaskan version of loam - which yields good traction till it dries. Chester Good took high points in the 125s, but not without some resistance from Anchorage riders Steve Hartman (Mn k ), and Wayne Broste (Hon). Inimitable Canadian Clayton Chikletts got off hard in the second moto while trying to complete a ground-sky combination, and finished the day spectating next to a cooler. Kevin Goard took a radial Maico bristling with trickery to a smooth overall in the 250s, followed in by Jerry Mucha on a Pursang, and Kim Jessup on an o ther radial. Bruce Lockwood's CZ suffered terminal dust-foul, as did Dennis Hanrahan 's CR Husqvama, which was really too bad since both of these lads are older (wise?) riders, and a treat for the spectators. Saturday night found most riders re-jetting, gearchanging, and re-shocking for Sunday's final motos to be held at th e Ice Palace, which is among other things, the Anchorage club 's home track. Another bright day greeted the survivors ; and a surprising number of 250 Experts were on lin e for the first mo t o . Four riders virtually hole-shot as one, with Kevin Goard leading out of the first turn on his Maico closely followed by the blanket group of Dennis Hanrahan (Hus), Jerry Mu cha (Bul), and Kim Jessup (Mai). Bruce Lockwood (CZ) patiently waited in cleaner air for burnout to set in. Goard rode progressively smoother and faster for the win and, finally, the day; while Lockwood, Mucha, and Jessup played a high speed game of switchy-switchy for second and third . Dennis Hanrahan, being somewhat of a motocross astronaut, survived something the rest of us didn't see , and kept his jet-like CR Husky back around fourth for the rest of the day. Lockwood ended up second for the day, and, Jerry Mucha, after breaking one set of Bilsteins, took third honors. Heart Fund Indoor By Lynne Diltz GRANTS PASS, ORE., FEB. 23 This was the third race sponsored by the Southern Oreg on Motorcycle Association for the benefit of a worthy organizat ion . Today's proceeds, over o ne hundred dollars , went to the Oregon Heart Association. Track conditions were perfect and the racing was relatively smooth with few acciden ts and no serious injuries . allowing vo lun t eers from the Grants Pass Rural Fire Department to sit on the sidelines and enjoy themselves. Those future professionals, well . . . . hopefuls, anyway, had a good day. The Min i class was fast and furious, with 14 boys scrambling for better positions. There were 19 kids out in the 100 Kids class, which has limits of 100cc engines and riders under 16 ye ars of age . Fourteen 250s flat flew through their heats and mains. .Jeff Cook, Caveman Country rider, dominated the day by winning and tr ansferring from the C Mai n, winning and transferring from the B Main, and going on to win the n um ber one trophy in the A Main. • Anchorage 250 rider Jerry Mucha (known locally as "Madman Mucha'" at the Juneau season opener. After the dust had cleared, Chester Good was the high point 125 rider for the year; Kevin Goard took it for th e 250 class; while Bru ce Lockwood had high points in the Open. On the basis of total points earned, Bruce Lockwood was awarded Alaska State Champion for 1974. In spite of hassles and inequities it was a fine season of racing, especially marked by the co-operation b etween the Juneau and Anchorage districts. Special th anks must go to Tom Acord of the Juneau Cycle Club, who always manages to find time inside a busy schedule to put some good racing together; and to the staff and management of The Motorcycle Shop , in Anchorage, for their help in compiling season points. • 0-35 scrambles rider Gary Clark By Janilee Renaud Gary races in the 125cc Expert class. He rides a Suzuki on which his parents sponsor him. (They own Clarks Suzuki in Visalia .) Gary has 68 trophies that he has accumulated, mostly first and second place wins. Gary is number four in Blue Plate 0-35 Bantam Weight Division. •
