Dick Mann began by saying th at ro ad racing in the United States had chan ged a lot in the years since it was first introduced. He convinced everybody by telling a story about he and J oe Leonard racing at Dodge Cit y , Kansas, several years ago. Dic k explained tha t the rac e was hel d at an unused air field where two run ways th a t fo rmed a "T" shape were used to lay out the co urse. The only pro blem wa s tha t the two .runway s di dn 't q ui te meet ! There was a sizeable stre tch of dirt betwee n the two section s! Die k wen t o n ex p laini ng ho w the event was run , the problems and th eir solu tions , encoun tered pai n ting a picture very di ff eren t fro m th e high-pressure big money even ts th at Nati on als are today . Th e sto ry amazed and amused the crowd, most of whom were to o yo ung to know abou t the " old days. " The rest of the evening was devoted to giving ou t the awards to the class winners. Over 40 t rophies were presented in 14 diff eren t classes, b u t th e one that is m ost coveted is t he Over -all Grand Prix winner, going to th e rider who gains the m ost p oi nts co mpeting in GP events d uring the year, who is then the AFM Number One rider for tl.e next year. Rudy Galin do from Santa Fe Springs , California was given a four foot high trophy, but wh at really set the group to clapping and shouting was the $1500 in checks! Th e scoring at Sandhill Ranch left much to be des ired but the rid ers went along with the prob lems in st ride and Tom an d his gang promise a smoother show ne xt time. Jim Turner (Bul) had a bad start an d had to make hi s way th ro ugh traffic most of the 25 minute mot o, He almos t took second place over Brian J odry (Mon), but had to settle fo r third by a foot. In the sec ond moto , J im Turner and Dan Turner, after just a few laps, were in t he lea d with Dan trying his best to get by the Bultaco ace . He failed, and Jim Turner had the win the second moto and a second overall for the day behind Dan's one-two placement. The 125 Experts were the fastest riders of the da y with clocked times as low as I :06. Dan Turner on a 125 Husky won both motos with Mike Preston (Ho n) and Darrell Shultz (Bul) righ t on his tail finishing second and third respec tivel y . It really wasn 't an Open clas s track due to th e fact th at the winner John Kent (Bul) had a fast lap time of I : 09, three seconds slower than the 125s and on e sec on d slo wer than the 250s. Delmo Becker (CZ) and Steve Byers (Y Z) took secon d and third respectively in the Open Experts. • Results in Results Section. Sand course MX By Doug Murphy PLYMOUTH , CAL., FEB. 2 Today's race was scheduled on the nat ural-terrai n track where Hare Scrambles are fre quently ru n . Ho wever, due to the enormo us amo unt of rain, promoter Fred Dion decided to go o n the sand course. It was a new circuit with plenty of water holes and mu d. Dave Lo ngcor (Bul) fou nd this o ut fast with two h orrendous spills during early m orning practice in the ' very same waterhole. This did not stop Longcdr, as he put in a very good ride in the Open class with a first in the first moto , and a third in the second moto due to a small crash. This was just enough to cost him the overall victory as Bill Carter (YZM) new to victory with a tw o-o ne score. Mike Marshall (Bul) got th e th ird overall. In th e 25 0 classes, Rodney Pogue (Y ZM) received t he overall Am at eur vic tory with a win and a third place . Nick Geranio (Ho n) managed to get sec o nd overal l o ver Gre g Hebard (Hus) who ap pe ared to be the fastest in the clas s. Hebard only managed a fifth in . the first moto, but really stormed back with an easy win in the second moto whil e Geranio scored a three-two placement. Mark Gib so n (Bu l) won the 250 Experts with two first pla ces . Practically everybody else DNF'd except fo r Kevin Henry (Bu l) and Kim Reeg (Bul). They both tied for second place as Kevin took a second in the latter moto and Reeg took a third. However, Reeg had more leading laps and was given second place honors as well. Danny "Mago o " Chandler (Hon ) totally wax ed t he 125 Experts with wins in both of th e 20 min ute mote s. • Results in Resul ts Sect ion.
