Getting hi s normal starts in th e middle of t he pa ck, John in the ' first 30-m inute moto stay ed on it whil e th e lead er lost a ch ain . Vin ce Clark (Suz) got by a few o f t he Hon das to tak e second whil e John open ed up a lead th at no one co uld close . After th e moto, I saw wh y he h ad to do this, his fr ont wheel was co mi ng apart. Moto T wo , Vin ce Clar k gate d fou rth and John sixth. Vin ce p owered by t wo ri de rs an d John moved up also . Agai n the leader wen t out and Vin ce took ove r the lead, leaving John to fight his wa y up. Vin ce went on to win the m oto for first overall. Chucking sand at Sandhill By Steve Cast illo BRE NTWOOD, CAL ., FEB. 16 Ron Self pick ed up his seco nd 250 Pro win in as many weeks today . They changed the Sandhill Ranch track layout somewhat; throwing in so me tigh t turns an d a few good up and down hill s. Most riders dug the n ew tr ack b ut th o ught it was a li t tle n arrow in mos t places , m a kin g it difficult to pass . Self (Mon ) reali zed t he pas sing problem s wh en in th e first 250 Pro race he was hel d to ab out sixth at th e start. Off first was Pet e Scarlett (Mai ), Curt Berggren (Y Z) and Charley Halcomb [Hus) , These th ree riders really m oved out quickly, leaving m ost everybody behind. Berggren 's motor started sounding sic k an d he retired shortly wi th a partial seizure. Halcomb put the drive o n Scarlett an d soon got by , Scarlett later retired with bike problems. Halcom b had about an eight second lea d o n Self who was m oving up very ra p idly. J o hn Dieu ridin g a European Yamah a m on osh oc k was ne x t to last o ff th e line but he had worked up passin g riders left and right o n a trac k th at wasn't easy to pass on . Self was closin g in o n Halcomb and Dieu was closing in o n Self, with two laps to go the race was starting to look interesting! Halcomb was able to hold onto his lead and win t he moto, But Self go t in to problems up on th e hill and wen t down. Die u was righ t there and second place was now his. Self led the seco n d moto fr om start to finis h. Self h ad problems with a few riders b eh ind him but th er e was n o th ing he co uldn't handle. The real ra cin g was goin g o n for sec ond pl ace . Dan Roberts (BuI ) an d Pet e Scarlett were th e onl y two ri ders wi thin distance , goin g a t i t lik e there wer e m o re than a few doll ars involve d. Co ming up again fro m a poor start was ve te ran MX man John Dieu, Dieu de ci ded to join th e ex cit emen t up ahead. With in a lap the b ig race for second place involved three top riders banging it o ut back and fo rth. Fo r abou t three laps these three riders were ru nning so close, an ybody's m is ta ke wo uld bump somebody up a position. Dieu was the first to bre ak loose. On a short straight before a small ju m p he banged into Scarlett 's rear wheel. This was ge tting to be too mu ch fo r Dieu so he gave the Y Z the wide o pe n treatment and jetted by the st ar tled Maico rider. Ro berts was the m an Dieu had his sights set on no w, but things weren ' t to be eas y for Die u as Charley Halcomb was now in fo ur th and m oving up hard an d fast. It was t he last lap . Self had the win an d t he overall b ut if Halcomb was to get sec o n d he had to ge t by Dieu. Coming down th e hill , t he last o ne bef ore tlie scoring booth Halcomb hel d it W FO but Dieu is a lot lik e Halcomb an d he had th e sa me id ea. Die u emerged the victo r with sec on d overal l and Halc om b pi cked up a well fo ught th ird pl ace o n his Moo re & Sons Husqvarna.
