Old Man Wmter really dished out a nasty Saturday this time then hung the sun out Sunday to turn the sparkling white snow into good old Oregon mud. Everyone was sorted out and placed in a class as close as possible to his engine size and ability. There was even some pretty good competition especially in the 125 Juniors. Mickey Schy and Jeff Cairns battled all three motos .to sec who was the quickest Honda rider. Schy won out despite a dump in the whoop-de-docs during the final race. They made an Open Intermediate class of Monte Lalack (250 Hon) and Open Junior Jim Newman (Mai) to ride with the 125 Intermediate class of Mark Johnson (Suz) and Mitch Kirkpatrick (C·A). Mark and Mitch each had a win but Mitch wound up in half the trackside banners in the third moto, then his bike died with a gurgle. Newman picked up the Open win. The Turkeys were led in the first moto by Ted Walker (Mon). He led the second one, too, un til he fell in the last lap. Jon Michaels (DKW) took the win, then led wire-to-wire in the final moto for first overall. Things were really loose all day. Denny Howard just rode to sec if he still could! A lot of the snow balls seemed to be aimed at announcer Bill Woods who has one coming from nearly everyone. During one intermission he was in the sign up shack when he sensed they were laying for him. Brave as he is he donned his dark glasses and ran out at top speed to hide behind an old gray-haired woman who was yelling something about an expensive camera and tape recorder. Porterville rain date By Felix Adamo PORTERVILLE, CAL., FEB. 16 After being cancelled two weeks in a row because of rain, these D·35 riders weren't about to let the threatening overcast day get them for a third week. In the mains Don Howard (Yam) fought his way from the back of the 56·89cc Experts to take the lead on the third lap and held on to it for the win. Rodney Sullivan (Yam), who places regularly in the top spots, grabbed second while No . One plate holder of the small bores, Mike Garrison (Yam), took third. The I75·200cc Expert Main got off to a smooth start but by the time they reached the jump, things weren't so smooth. Six riders got tangled up and bikes were going everywhere. They were going around the jump, off the side of the jump, back down the jump, and some just laid there on the jump. Luckily no one was hurt seriously and after about 10 minutes of picking up machinery, the "men of steel" re-mounted and much to everyone's surprise, they all made it back to the restart. Rick Delgado (Yam) took the lead after the restart with Derek Land (Yam) pressuring Delgado all the way. Land and Delgado kept seesawing baek and forth, taking turns with the lead, b ut it was Land who took it for good on the third lap, getting the win. Derek Land made it two wins today as he took the IOOcc Expert honors over Mark Powers (Yam) and Darren Prichett (Yam). • Results in Results Section.
