Tim Bowman led it t o the bomb with his new 400 Yamaha. Kevin Hasten (400 CZ) surged past only to drop o ut with gear bo x troubles, Bowman led for the next 10 miles, only to suffe r engine seizu re in a sandwash. Afraid to damage his new bike, he let it co o l off, rode slo wly back to the pits and was one o f the first to congratul ate Padilla aft er he took the chec kered fla g. Rick Shirey (360 Yam) ran second most of the way ' and held the position even after his front tire went flat on the second lo op . Randy Fleming (250 Ya m) moved from seventh on the first loop to take third, second 250 Expert. The Gregory 's Automotive team o f Morgan Malocco (36 0 Yam) and Don Rotundo (400 Hus) were running third an d fourth on the first loop, but Maloc co suffered a flat at the beginning of the sec ond lo o p and Rotundo was passed by Fleming and Jack Orndoff (400 CZ) on the second loop, but he still took first Amateur. Orndoff was trying out his riew toy , a 400 CZ .with a five-speed box from a J awa ISDT bike. Orndoff's teammate, Phil Stumbo o n a 250 CZ , moved from u p from 15th on the first loop only to run out of gas a co uple of m iles fro m t he finish line. Ed Rodine (Hus) was in for sixth, first 250 Amateur. Experts Jim Irby (4 0 0 Yam) and Tim Ralph (250 Hus) were next, followed by first Novice Dave Bowman (400 Yam), Tim 's brother, fin ishing ni nth. Rounding out the top 10 was motocrosser Von Peterson whose old CZ carried him to second Open Amateur. Randy Coulter guided his 400 " m o nosled " in to take first Beginner, followed by Tom McBride (175 Yam) and Chuck Fowler (360 Hus). The 30·mile co urse was a mixture of wide-open fireroad, sandwash, tight canyons and a few rocks. Riders entering a two-mile rock garden were greeted by a sign that said "District 37 Section ." "He went past awful fast and some other guy did, too, both with steam on me." The " Do ug Hammer" referred to was indeed Bruce Hammer, and the " so me other guy " turned o ut to be Hurley Wilvert on a Yamaha 700. Ron Pierce, Bob Endicott, and David Emde showed u p , too, as great a line-up of tarmac tal ent as Orange County has seen for some ti me . Wilvert, (who may be aboard a factory Suzuki at Daytona if the recent MIA suspension of newly-signed Su zuki ra cer David Aldana is not overturned at a February 19 ap peal hearing) found the Yamaha quite nice . He used it to first run away from , th en cruise in front of, the Open GP class. Behind him , Endicott (Yam) and Em de (Yam) did the one-two ro ut ine in the 350 GP class (ru n at the same time) , and Harry Klinzmann made his ret urn to ro ad racing wi th a third in th at class. Harry, who was seriously injured in a late 1974 production class cras h at Orange County , is planning to sti ck to GP . ." Then , losin g 500 RPM , he watched first John McDonald, then Pat Beacom (both Kaw 900) slip by. McDonald stretched it o ut, Beaco m threw it away in Turn Two, and Cook won . • Results in Results Section. $600 Mudocross at Indian Swamps By Barney Drake VALENCIA, CAL., FEB . 9 Honda Ace Tim Lunde came to Indian Dunes only to find out the name had been changed to "Indian Swamps." However, mu didn 't stop him and the other top Experts from going for the $600 AM purse. Lunde won overall, but it wasn't eas pickings. Vince Clark (Su z) took a third in the first mota and won the second but wasn 't a mat ch for Lu nde's first and second. Randy Benda (Han), with an; impressive sec on d an d third, took third ove rall. 500 Expert Jim West (Mai) won both m otos unquestionab ly . He was first to th e first turn and fi rst to th e chec kere flag both t ime s. J im either likes the mud or he has gills instead of lungs. Von Peterson (Mai) and ' Dave Ha ugh (Bul) took u p the slack. Haugh slid by in th e slu dge to t ak e second over Peterson. Billy Payne, riding a new CZ with gas sh oc ks, four-fins barrel, etc., had litt! trouble winn ing the fir st m o ta. Eddie Co le (Bul) to o k second. In 'the second moto Mi ke J enkinson (Hu s) go t the hole shot and held a lead for about two laps until Eddie Cole passed th e tiring Jenkinson. While this was goi ng on ,
