Melville. L.I. N.Y. 117 46 Bill Eisele, fast . making himself known in the 1 75 class, last week to ok third, this week a second ahead of third 175 Expert Bill Friant. Friant's helmet ha d to be greased up before he put it on Sunday m orn in g, because of his Saturday nigh t before-the-race antics. The Cartwrigh t family swept the trail weekend, with Marc class this Cart wri gh t first Trail Expert an d Darin picking up firs t Trail Novice. Darren Kelsey was second to Marc, while Joe Lockhart was second to Dari n after a close battle thro ugh the blowing san d du nes. Steve Co x, Tim Bridwell, Tony Mistretta and Art Bar tele were no t far apa r t in 175 Amateur . But this was no t tru e in the Old Timers clas s, wi th Gary Griffin leaving only his Bul tracks for the res t to follo w. RO. Elmore, Chuck Alexander, AMA Represen tat ive Mike Hinshaw (I knew there was something susp icious about Hinshaw getting his red sticky) and Dean's dad Norm Modesett rounded out the top five "receding hai r-line" riders. Ray Sadd and Leslie Arita had quite a battle in the Novice class, with Sadd's 250 Husky out-powering Arita's 175 Penton through the sand. Bo th won their respective classes, with DRA hot shoe Geo rge Harvey III following in their wake for fITSt Open Novice. The course consisted of a fast sandy smoke b omb run, a rocky enduro type section, sm all sections of fire roads, and miles of rolling virgin sand dunes and sand washes with banked turns nature had supplied. If nothing else, th e riders at the Desert MC's race will remember the great course and the unique starting technique. They lit a Shamrock banner on fire, and several riders on t he lin e must have though t this was so me kind of d esert sacrifice, as they just sat on their bikes and looked. _ Resu lts in Resul ts Section . Ascot hosts AMA pilot program By Maureen Lee G ARDENA , CAL., FEB. 14 Eighty-nine riders came to Ascot Friday night to ride the MiA's pilo t program mixing professional Novice and J u nio r ride rs with lily-white Amateurs. They all ride for trophies, but in the 250/360 class the pros can earn transfer points. These are paid as follows. First eams 125, then 75,50 and 25 . The program will also serve as a training gro und for o fficials so there was retired national number Ral ph White down on the line as assistant starter and the voice of AMA racing, Roxy Rockwood han dlin g the flags . Rox y had a few of the boys try him o ut but they _usually got put back for their p ain s. Ed Laws o n an d Wayne Rain ey both Honda-moun ted wo n their 125cc heats which left the rest to scrap it out for transfers out of th e semi . Darren Penrod (Yam ) won that after a good race with ' G a rdo n Kid d. The main was fo r eight laps, and Darren Penrod shot off the line on the righ t side to hit tum on e first, then Ed Lawson took it away fr om hi m by going underneath. Mike Minnig (Ya m) had been in the tight group, soon got by Lawson. Wayne Rai ney who had been holding third lost it to Go rd on Kidd , who hadn't go tten a good start and really had to move to get up there. After a six heat and two semi program th e bigger bikes ca me to the line. Eric Gifford (Yam) from Bakersfield had won the fastest heat of the evening and looked as if he would repeat in the main. Two more Yamahas ridden by Steve Fortune and Vince Head were righ t behind him dogging his shad ow. Then with a crack Gifford's engine blew. From then o n the sparse fans were treated to some very good flat Fortune was riding tr ack. Steve tremendously with Vince Head just ab o u t glued to his rear wheel , lap after . lap. Fortune, with eyes in the back of his head seemed to know just where Head was going to try it next. High or low, it didn't matter, Steve was there. But H e a~ also knew what he was about, and whe n the time carne to pass he knew where the o pening wo uld be and it was . As he got the white flag he d ucked down lo wer o n the short back straight and went by Fortune for the win. The eveni ng ended at a respectabl e hour as the show was run o ff pro mp tly and some very nice trophies were given o ut, five to the mi nis, an d thr ee each to the other two classes. If you want to give it a try, phone the Ascot office for information and regulations. Some of the ru les are a little different than a _ regular Amateur TT scrambles. Results in Res ults Section.
