Open class action on th e downhill. 0.37 Hangover MX By Jeff Peck SIMI VALLEY, CAL , FEB. 16 Mike Hannon who is always an exciting influence on District 37 racing was noticab ly absent fro m the starting line-up at Valley Cycle Par k this Sunday. He was "torqued down" to matrimonial bliss Saturday by the form er Teresa Martin. The reception following saw many of the 0-37 ra cers taking p ar t in the festivities, which stretched far into the night. It wasn 't very difficult to pick these merry makers out the next morning. They were the ones lying in the pits with bloodshot eyes. With Mike out, it was expected that Jim Connolly would run away with the Op en Expert class. This was not the case, d ue to Ric k Blanton (Bul) . He came o ut o f the pack to lead Connolly home in both motos by a mere 10 feet. J im tried different lin es almost each lap, but cou ldn't muster enough shortcuts or horsepower to get by Blan ton . Chuck Lanzarone had to be satisfied with holding third spot o n his Ma ico and watching the two front r unners battle it out,: With th e Open class well under his thumb, Blanton came out against a pack of very fast 250 Experts and grabbed first overall with first and second placings in both m o tos. Allan Cook broke his D-37 win ning streak today with a very hard fallo n the first lap of the first moto. Not wanting to let little things get him down, Allan cam e back in the second moto and so un dl y trounced everyone in sigh r, The 125 Ex perts served notice from the m o men t the starting gate dropped. In th e first moto Tom Zahnter and Mark Gambetta paired off. Both riders were running unfamiliar Elsinores. Zahnter ju st finished building his Saturday afternoon and Gam be tta had wheeled his off the dealer's floor Saturday morning. Both riders pulled away fr o m the pack and diced it out from start to finis h with Gambetta grabbin g the win after passing Zahnter in the last co m er. The second moto was all Zahnter 's show, leading from start to fini sh , doing every th ing but pedaling hi s • Honda. Results in Results Section. The tr action was the best all day long. South Torrance High 's Don Hui zing pl aced first overall also for th e second straight week. He won the final two m oto s a fter a th ird place finish in the op ening ro und. In his first ap pearance at Ascot, 125 Beginner Don Miller rode his Honda to vic to ry in th ree m ot os. Miller, who is a ninth-grader at Hamilton Junior High in Lo ng Beach, completely destroyed his co mpe titi o n , as h e grabbed the early lea d in each mo to an d ran away from the rest of the fiel d. 2 50 Junior Herb ie Sheldon (Mai) sco re d his third win in th ree tries at Asco t, once again taking all three motos.
