Jeff Pay ne led th e firs t lap of the 250 show wi th J im Hun ter in secon d bu t expired a p lug j us t afte r the sc orin g stand an d re t ir ed . On the second go- ro u n d it was Gu enter Gmelin (Mai) in th e lead with Hun ter still in second b u t having to co n te nd with a fast ris in g J ohn Pro to . Proto t ook the lead from Steve St acka ble 's ac e Deutsch mechanic (Gmelin ) while th e Hunter CZ dr opped to last with problems. By lap 10 Gmelin and Simons had a good chase going on the lone Proto while Ste ve Moulton moved a 250 XL Honda into third over Pau l Carlisle. On la p 40 Proto st opped with a clutch problem . but kept going after losing the lead t o Simons. Er ic Engen appeared to have moved onto the same lap, but the tapes showed af te rw ard that he was tw o Japs d own. For the Open class, it was Scott Pearson ou t wi th an ea rly start an d the lea d for th e fir st three laps over Gary Vanderpool on a revamped Pop Ken yon Gr in go. San d wic hed in between o n the first tw o lap s was little Rod Sp en cer on a new Ho daka tha t really flew but a cras h bent th e sh ift lever a nd dropped the indoor c ham p bac k in t he pack, bu t not o u t o f the hun t. Pe arson had chai n problems a n d d rop ped th e CZ o ut giving Vanderpool a big lead but it was short lived as on the 10 th lap , t he gear box ex p anded through t he cases an d pu t the ISDT ride r on the sid e lines. It was Pat Fretwell an d Jerry Kole's tu m t o lead and they did right to the finish, with a on e lap lead ove r little Rod Spencer on th at in credible Hodaka. The st o p had dropped the fl at tracker to 22nd bu t with so m e renewed vigor a n d so m e bending wor k done by Fred the mechanic, the kid wa s unbeliev ably fast.
