With only the winner advan cing to the National, Roberts rode h is posterior o ff trying to ca tch rookie Expert McClure, b u t he just wasn't a ble to . As if one ro o kie standing in his way wasn't e no ugh, he also had to co n te nd with an o th er. J ay Ridgeway and his WKR Kawasaki, on the opening laps. 1\lcCIure took t he win to score an upper, but in rejoicing he popped a wheelie at the ch ec kere d flag. an d then fai led t o m ake tum o ne. He ended up bouncing off the b ullpen wall outside of tu rn o ne with his Bul landing on top of him. The downer was a bro ken a rm. For Roberts, it m arked the first tim e in ove r two years t hat he had fai led to make a dirt National. The second se m i was lame co m pare d t o th e first, bu t Geral d 's army kept th e decibel co u nt up. Co nsola t ion time, in th e for m of t he 12-la p trophy race, was an all Na tional Number one show fo llo wing a first lap po int position performance by Roger Sterling. Trop hy ti me and a kiss for Roberts, but only seve n National points. Chuck Palm gren occupied the pole position for the 20-lap National, by virtue of his fast heat winning time of 2 :3 1. 25. Filling out the front row were Darryl Hurst, David Aldana, Randy Skiver, Dave Han sen . an d Hank Scott. Starter Phil Dyson brought out his red flag twice as both Hansen a nd Hu rst read hi m down t o the final twitch before he th rew the flag. A few words between Dyso n a nd Han sen were exchanged before a third start was flagged off. O nce again, it was Hurs t and Han sen off the lin e first and th at was t ha t as fa r as the first two po sit ions wer e concerned. Aldana took to the outside o n the first la p an d blew by Randy Skiver and Han k Scott. Sco tt opened eyes be h ind him as he nearl y lo st his Sh ell Thue t Yam ah a in tu m fo u r. A spectacula r save prob abl y opened t he same ey es a sec o nd time. Hurst, Hansen , Alda na, Skiver, an d Sc o tt co n ti nued t o occu p y the top five positions fo r th ree la ps. On the fou rth lap , J or genson slip p ed by Scott with Mark Williams d uplicating th at move on the fifth lap . Aldana was riding th e outsid e and m anaged to pull eve n with Hansen on the seventh lap. Hansen go t the m essage and turned the wick up, dropping Aldana back in t o a three-w ay figh t for t h ird with Skiver an d Willia ms . The halfway flags saw so m e m ajor shu ffling begin as Williams and Skiver . mo ved up past Aldana, and Clee k began to charge up in to th e top positions. Cleek moved his K&N /B el·Ray Ya m ah a past Ald an a on t he 14 th lap , p ast Skiver on th e fif tee nth an d ahead o f Williams on t he 16th to nai l do wn third fo r th e nigh t . Williams won the battle for fo u rth and Skiver saw his fifth finis hing position go a way on the fin al hand ful of laps as both Aldana an d Hocking got by. Hank Scott took eighth ahead of the Cowtown Yamaha o f Texan J im m y Lee. Tenth was Corky Keener, who was fo rced to practically sit on the gas tank of his Sprint in attempts to get the power to the ground. The seating position eventually wore the Michigan Flash down. Following Corky across the line was the amazing Ch uck Palmgren , who answered upon being q uestioned as to whether or n ot it was hi s back that forced him to dro p back, "No. It was a co mbination of things . My fro nt tire skated, b ut it was a b u nch o f th in gs. That d octor did wonders o n m y back. I'll be 10 0 p er cen t b y Dall as. " After this hole-shot spr int by Texan Roger (30 N) Sterl ing. Roberts ran off with the Trophy Main. It was small consol at ion. DN F wen t behind the names of Schaeffer and Rush. Billy 's Yamaha tied up near th e halfway m ar k an d Bubba's Bul ap peared to do the sam e. For Darryl Hurst the win m arked "the greates t day of m y life." He thanked his "su p er sist er and brother-in-law" for managin g his sh op, Hurst Supply Co. , whi le " \ go ra cing," and said that th e 2 0-mi n u t e ride h ome would be the greatest trip ever. It m arked th e third straight weekend of t he yo u ng year th at t he likeable Texan has taken home the victor's spoils fro m a sh ort track. His tr aveling buddy, Mike Gera ld , be tter watch out.
