Dirt Diggers' AMA D-37 .MX By John Huetter MOORPARK, CAL.,JAN. 19 After a slack three seasons, AMA District 37 motocross competition seems to be coming on strong. Las t Sunday's club-sponsored event at Valley Cycle Park saw hundreds of riders turn o u t for points competition a n d seems to be an indicator of the tum-around. The proliferation of motocross promoters in the last few years detracted from the rider population available to fill a starting gate at a D-37 event but indifference, badly p repared , repetitious courses, and escalating entry fe es from those same promoters seem to be respo nsible, at least in part, fo r t ru e sportsman motocross competitors co ming back to the District events. It was refreshing to pay a five dollar post entry and, if you didn 't have district numbers, be handed a set of pie-plates to tape a li yo u r scoo te r by smiling ladies. The Dirt Diggers Club and Valley Cycl e Park consp ired t o re -work the usual c o u rse to in corpo rate more tight , off-camber turns, a tricky dropaway and one mo re gnarly . horsepo wer uphill -ma king th e circ u it n early a m ile and a ha lf long and. gen era lly , mo re o f a riders' course. T h e 25 0 Expert class was no t so d omin ated by one rider as the o thers have been for at least a ye ar. Consequently AI Co oke (Bul) had to go very fast in taking the overall win in a very rapid co n fro n ta tion of over 30 riders . . Two diffe ren t kinds of happenings are changing the co m p lex io n of these D-37 races, incl udi n g this one by the Dirt Diggers, for the better . One is th e growth of the Women 's Division in racing. Cherry S tockton (Bul) seems to increase both her speed and charm with each season and was cruising home an easy winner of both motos until her bike uit wi th a la p to go. OCIR - Sat., Feb. 22 salv aged a respectable position with a sprinting push of her 125 t o the checkered. Consistency and passing ability ne tted Lori Payne (Ho n ) the over all w in . John Maroney, Sr. continued to demonstrate that he's the fastes t ov er-40 motocross ra cer in the Distric t. He re-makes nice d a mpers, too. The other n ice feature of these AM A-sanctioned club race meetings is the ease with which non-license holders ca n enter and ride, something th at wasn't true until very recently. Both contribute to make the racing more o f the down-loose kind which , for a lot of reasonable sportsmen, is what a ttracted them to motocross in the first place. h 's where a good time should be had by all.
