DRA hare scrams By Dale Brown ADELANTO , CAL., J AN. 26 6 Benn y Padilla led the race fro m the smokebomb to the checkered flag, winning Overall ahead of )(evin Hasten and Jim ' Fishback . Padilla, on a Takahashi-sponsored 250 Yamaha m o noshoc ker, had a 200-yard lead over Fishback (4 0 0 Yam ) at th e bomb. Hasten (4 0 0 CZ) went past in th ird, passing Fishback abo u t two miles past the bomb. From then on the order went unchanged, the t o p three riders cir culating about a minute ap ar t . Fishback had tro uble with fouled spark plugs but no p roblem finishing third, for Bill Conroy (400 Hus) was several minutes behind him. It was Fishback's first DRA finish in three tries. Fourth-place Conroy didn't get a good start and moved p ast many riders on th e first loop. to come through in fifth, behind Don Rotundo (4 0 0 Hu s], whom he passed on the second loop. Jim Irby too k his new 400 mon osh ock Yamaha on its first race an d moved from 10th on the first loop to fif th at the fi nis h, for fo urth Open Expert. Rotundo ' was in for sixth, netting first Am ateur. Dennis Greene was dicing with Wayne Cook (25 0 Hon) for fourth earl y in the race, until Cook seized. Blown for k seals made the front end harsh, not the best thing fo r th e cho p py course and Greene dr opped to seventh, sec o nd 25 0 Expert o n a Yamaha lo an ed from Fairway Yamaha. Morgan Malocco (500 Yam) was runnin g sixth fo r awhile until he crashed in a sandwash. Running a chain from a Harley 74 helped solve the chain problems that have been plaguing him recen tIy. He was running a spare cy linder to day , with a little over-do ne porting. Would you believe a 500 Yamaha that doesn 't come on the pipe until 8,000 RPM? He en de d u p eigh th . Motocrosser Dale Anders ran a 360 Bultaco out of his d ad 's (AI Anders) shop and took first Novice finishing ninth. It was his third desert race. Eric Spaeth has been co nsisten t this year. Today was the second time in a row th at he finished first small-b ore, at 10th Overall. Am ateurs Red Sanders (4 0 0 Hus) and Dennis Tipton (25 0 Bul ) rounded out th e first biker's dozen. Louise White and Leslie KIug h ad a pretty good battle for first girl. Leslie ahead on her new 250 was but t ransmission m onosh o cker, problems o n th e second loop forced her to wave goodbye to Louise (250 Hus). Allen Meek (15 Hon) and James Adams (250 Yam) had a good battle all the way around for first Beginner. Meek wo n, b ut not by much . The 29 -mile co urse was very choppy all the way aro und, but th e Experts just ignored the bumps and made good time. A few Beginners were see n with pumped and swollen forearms, however. The sam e loop will be th e first lo o p of ' "Hasten 's Honeymoon Hare and Hound," t o be run next Sunday. Burpo t old Cy cle News that the DRA Baker-to-Vegas race has been ca ncelled. Burpo said that if he had pressed, he co uld have gotten the BLM permit for the race, but the consensus opinion was that holding the race would ' h amper BLM's chances of winning the suit filed against it by th e environmentalist groups over Barstow to Vegas. • Resu lts in Res ults Section. Flu bug snuffs rider turnout at Ponderosa M.O.R.E. Benefit By Lane Campbell LANCASTER, CAL., JAN. 26 " Well, my buddy was goi ng to come, b ut he's in bed with the flu." Lyn n and Patty Kelsay of the l\1ojave Dese rt Racing Association must have heard th at from nearly every rider and three-wheeler who sho wed up for their low-pressure team race with proceeds to benefit M.O .R.E. Ac tually , though the money is going to protect motorcyclists ' rights, it was the three-wheelers who brought the biggest Indian Dunes. And they all did it by the sensationa l grand slam rou t e. Payne had the roughe st way to go, wh ile sliding a big-bore Maico against a fast field of Opens. Billy was stoutly push ed in all three of the seven-lap hea t events. In the first moto Payne salvaged a half-length win over Open Expert champion Dave Haugh (Bul) . Ron Haase (Bul), ridin g for the Revell works of Sun Valley, was nex t in line t o t ake a crack at Payne during the second moto, and stoked up a he ap of p ressure against the eventual winner. Next up cam e Joe Root aboard his Analube Bullet, who 'grab be d a lead over Pay ne in the third mo t o , only to wa tch it dwindle away right at th e final wire. Among t hose finis hi ng close to Harper , wh ose Revell CZ co m ple te ly dominated all three races for the 250 Expert class, were Dave Zahrt (Bul), Stev e Roark (Bul) an d a rapidly-improving Mike Lacy (Ka w ). Mike McAtee esc aped injury when his bike went end-for-end on the front-chute jump while holding the lead in the final moto of the 125 Experts. Completing an outstanding day for the racing Viens family, sister Lori was victorious against Po wder Puffers, while yo unger sister Sherry took home her first tro phy in twelve st ar ts against • Beginner minicyclists.
