By Joh n Bethea CARLSBAD , CAL., JAN. 26 For the first time in American history - and probab ly the o ne an d only time this season - the AMA Na tio na l 125cc, 250cc and 500cc Champion s of motocross faced off against the SoCal CMC No. I all in one clas s, in the first of two co nsec utive CMC $ 1,50 0 pro events. A dream co nfro n tatio n, yes, but it dwindled ear ly. First , Smith 's factory Honda seized with less than two laps remaining in the firs t m oto, while he was in second and closing. Then Weinert, in a one-sho t deal on a 125cc monoshock Yam ah a, ca me up with problems in the second moto an d finished eigh th overall. J ones, the Can-Am ac e who ad mitted his I 25 c~ machine lack ed power, plunged away anyway and secured seventh OA. Then Bell. Two great st arts were soon overcome by the newest Honda sensation, Tommy Croft, and the CMC Champ wound up seco nd on points with two seconds. "I ju st can't believe it ," said Croft after the fin ale. " I've waited so long to be on a full fac to ry te am and now I am. They do so mu ch. " Complimenting what th ey - the me chanics - di d, Croft did th e res t. No t only a 125cc Pro clean sweep , bu t also a 250cc dou ble agai nst, again , Smith and J on es. Fo n tana's Roc ket, Rex Staten (Mai) became th e first rider ev er to travers e the Carlsbad GP circuit (the one used in 19 73 ) in under 1:40. He clicke d off an incre di ble I :39. 1 in th e firs t lap of his final 500c c even t against Weinert , in the process punchin g 2.4 seconds o ff the record set by the Best Euro pean in time trials in 1973 at the Worl d Championship. Th at seco n d moto start was by far the grea test ever a t Carls bad. Althou gh Stat en cru sh ed th e recor d, he and Weinert tra de d th e lead four times in less tha n three-quarters o f a lap ! But, by its en d , S tat en held the lead by three seco nds. From th en on h e averaged between 1:4 I and I :4 2 per lap for the remainder of the 12-lap event . And Weinert was onl y I I seco nds bac k a t the chec kered! Warren Reid , on ly eight months a pro , got two in credible starts and led each 125 cc Pro go off the line . But , Croft was up there , too , and he quickl y pounced upon his lesser exp erie nced foe to take the lead . Smith was his closest com pe tito r until he seized on the II th lap of the first go, wh ich gave Bell, who was an early second, the runnerup spot again. Bell again finished second in the fin al for th e No. 2 place bu cks and Reid, clinging to a fifth an d four th finish, registered th ird overal l. Bell won the first two motostonight th en did n't sweat at all when Ray Lopez (CHI ) co pp ed the third. Mike j ust hung close in sec o nd for the easy overal l. Chu ck Lune (lion ) was the clear second rider overall with tw o seconds and a third. And de spite his final race victory, Lop ez achieved onl y a third place on po ints. J eff Vid ic, Maico-mounted once again, won th e firs t 25 0 bu t then cru shed a gearbox in the secon d. It was then th at Will Harper (CZ) too k the initiative and eked out a o ne-point tri u mph over ' Hal Strauss (Mai), si x-seven . Th e m argin ca m e in the seco nd even t when Harp er won. For the first tim e this ye ar, Rex Staten (Mai) finally bro ke in to th e winn er's co lumn in a night race, by taki ng all three m otos from a de termined gro uph eaded overall b}' J eff Jennings (CZ) and J oe J ohn ston (Mai ], two of the yo ungest Cl\IC pros around.
