What it adds up to is that Honda may have gotten more than they had expected in the rather quiet y oung man from Sa n Die go. F or Croft 's dist inguis hi ng a tt r i b u t e is his co nsistentl y superior starts, something Smith has yet to per fec t. In all four mot o s en te red this race me et ing. Croft was in th e fron t or with in t wo o r th ree positions of th e lead. Co mparably, Smith had to co me fro m about 23 rd on lap one of the first 250 moto to finally finish second , from abo ut l Oth in th e second 250 to win, and about eighth in th e first 125 to win. In the second 125, Smith ca used a delay at the st art when his gearbox co uld n' t hold a neutral, He finall y got underway a t mid pack, built it to ab ou t third onlv to have the entire sidec ase blowout. Of the entire Honda t cam, only Kars ma kers ha s more co nsiste n tly go o d starts. Smith and Croft tied with a first a nd sec ond api ece in th e 250s, Smith gett ing the nod with a final moto fietory . john DeSoto (O ss) rode an o th er strong race for th ird overall. He was never really o ut of con ten tio n.. Fourth was a consistent Bruce Mc Dougal (Yam) and fifth a surprising Raben Han nah (11 us ), a newcomer to So Cal CMC. West won th e first two mo tos and then took second to Rex "The Ro cket"' Staten, also Maico mounted, to ea rn the top spot. Staten, me anwhile , only tallied fourth O A when h e had his troubles in the second round and finished dead last in a field o f 10 . Staten, however, is reported to be chasing the CMC No .
