S1Z5.00. ,~ .4; '" - ,. } , FA Wright's fast flight By Curtis Randoll ADELANTO, CAL.,JAN.19 Breaking tradition, the Four Aces M.C. threw their 25th Annual Moose Run at Adelanto instead of the usuai Fremont Valley . Many of us were looking forward to the usual rolling hills and great down- Completekits1199,00. st ead the course was what you e xpec t a t Adelan to, fast and dusty. The bomb run was fairly short. I doubt if it was even three miles , and extremely fast with a few roc ks thrown in for fun. The leader at the bomb I think was number 13 (the girl who took numbers at the bomb forgot to designate class) with number five he avyweight behind him followed ~y Bill Becker. Ron Bebo, Dave Lapraik and Jim Wotring came through the bomb in the top ten and with a little changing of position managed t o stay that way for the rest of the race. Trudy Beck came limping back to the bomb after everyone had been through, with an ailin g motorcycle. She fixed the bike at the bomb with the help of so me spectators and still made it to the finish in time to win her class. Leading the Novi ce class to the bomb was Bob Greenwood with No. 22 1, another Open bike, right behind him. I would like to have heard how lo ng it took Ro n Wright, the leader, to make the first loop since the Four Aces threw in a Powerline Road that was over eight mile s lo ng and had one tum in it. Number 13 was second through the pits but I don't know his name sin ce he never made it to the finish . Ron Beb o was the third one through with Jim Wotring on a 250 Monoshock rillht behind him. Dean Modesett was the first 125 through and Charlie Hamill led th e Trailbikes at 21st overall. Onl y one hour a nd 5 0 minute s after the banner dropped, Ron Wright came down the finish chute claim in g th e first overall troph y. Ron Bebo of the Desert Foxes came in second overall and s e c o n d heavyweight Expert. Jim Wotring finished third overall and picked up a fITSt 250 E~pert trophy for his efforts. Dave Lapraik was next on his YZ Monoshock with the first 125 with Dean -Modeset t right behind him. Bob Ballentine switched to a 250 Husky today and finished third 250 Expert. Terry Davis and Chris Austin fini shed seventh and eighth overall, with Mark Stormes on his Canoga Park sponsored Suzuki and Birdie Greenberg finishing the top 10. The first Amateur to finish was Howard McCasland on his 400 Husky. Next two Amateurs were R. Savarese and Tracy Walters both on 250s. Greg Tucker was nex t on his 400, grabbing second Open Amateur. First 125 Amateur was Tom Kelly who just last month was cleaning ho use on the 125 Novices. The first Novice to finish was Bob Greenwood on his Yamaha with Lou Mongerone and Bill Van Hoesen taking second and third. First 175 Novice was John Laws on be atin g Ri ch a rd Humphrey who en ded up second. • ~ ?~ ,~ NI H BA SEATS A real buy, . . highbackMl seat . G CK s ready to bollm. Designedlor most any vehicle. The railbirds were enthusiastic all the way and raised a loud cheer when Grigby, taking the winner's flag, hit the berm the wrong way going into tum one and went gracefully over the highside, The mini Novice is rather becoming one of my fav orite classes. Eddie Tafoya and Todd Brown have a thing going each week. Tafoya can pitch it into a tum a -mite harder, but his Honda is just a bit less sharp than Brown's Yamaha. The difference in bikes makes for gre at racing between them. The rest of the gang in that class mix it up very well, like John Murphy (Yam) trying to get Mike Diego. Good racing! The 250 Juniors had the worst crash of the day and the two who went down were lucky to walk away from it . They and Bob Riffle (Bul) had been racing around laying on each other and only Riffle made it out of the inevitable tu mble. The Expert 250 first moto featured a good go between the three Yamahas of Steve Fortune, Mike Tidwell an d Mark Prescott with Bruce Rey n o ld s' Bu ltaco in there for good measure . Charles Petty o n a Bultaco won the first 500 Junior 3 5 0· 5 00 moto but lost the other two to the Suzuki of Clyde Dennel, The Gripsters M.C . is making an earl y bid to b e the Distric.t scramb!es champions as ano th er Gripster, JIm Foxe, took third. Second lap of the first Open combined moto, Larry Lambert's bike started laying down a sm o ke screen for a lap -and-a-half but held up long enough to get him an eighth. He got busy in the next two and took two seconds , which was high enough to get him a third . overall. Jim Wright wa s the winner who showed how fast Yamahas run. Still , we took a couple of Quick times for interest and caught Jim WriKht at 33 seconds one lap and Mike Tidwell over a second qui cker in the 250 class.
