I just get my fingers warmed up and I have to refuel. The Torco fumes are getting to me also. . The Cascade M/C of Bend, Oregon held a 100 mile cross-country race Dember 8 tho One hundred and fifty-eight riders bmved the frozen desert east . of Bend. ' It really wasn't frozen , but it sure was dusty. The smoke bomb was righ t by the spectators so they got a good look at me riders as they went bi on their first .lap. Dale . DeMaris (But had the lead a t this point, but later lost it to Bob Strobel when DeMaris lost a chain. DeMaris carries a spare ch ain, and before long h e' was going again only to stop a t the pits to replace a broken shock bolt. Despite all the delays, DeMaris ended up fourth overall. At the end of the second lap Klamath Falls' own Brad Lecklider was ri gh t on Strobel's ' tail. Everyone commented about it being a big bike course, as several miles of the 38 mile course were fast roads. Brad rides a 175 Can-Am, In the 'meantime, another story was brewing. A few hundred yards off the starting line, Gordon.Iones took a header and tried to eat his handlebars. He was carted off to the hospital in Bend, to find out he had a broken jaw, broken nose, broken wrist, rearranged teeth, and numerous scrapes. He had come to the race from the Portland area with a riding buddy and no one else. The rest of the day was spent by members trying to locate Dan Kent, riding in the 125 class. At 2 p .m, no one was allowed to start on another lap and a sweep rider went o ut to find Dan Kent had fallen on his third lap . resulting in a compound frac ture of the lower leg. Mr. Kent wa s taken to the hospital and try as they ma y, they could not get assigned to the same room. Here they were, 160 miles from home, alone. Mrs. Jones and Dan's girlfriend came to hold their hands Monday anti give them a ride home the' . following Thursday ! These guys should get the bad luc k award for 19741 Meanwhile, back at the race, Brad Lecklider on his little 175 Can-Am came in the overall winner! Leon Wilbanks of Bad Rock fame rode in , a trophy winner in the 250 clas s riding a prototype 250 Hodaka. Hi: informed me that we will ail be treated with seeing ' production 250 Hodakas in the spring. Ray LeRoque of Prinevil1e was first Old Timer, and he could hardly believe his eyes when he saw his trophy. Right behind 450 Husky .mo unted LeRoque, was Ed Chesnut (of Bad Rock movie fame) on a 125 Hodaka, also to take a trophy back to N.E. Oregon. I can't take these Toreo fumes any longer, (cough-cough) but I just wanted to let you know that the Northwest does not die in the winter time, but, their typetrt ryhk writers dolntedwses don't function in the cold. • Results in the Results Section. REDWOOD CITY , CAL. , DEC. 15 The Geritol Trial proved to be the fun event of the year. It was well organized by Lane Leavitt and Joe Masculine - even down to the weather. Lane promised us rain, and how did he get the weather to change from dry to wet? Simple: by doing a Rain Dance. Each rider rode with a point handicap - his age was subtracted from that of the ' oldest rider, and the difference was his handicap. Trial point only winner, by one point was Bill Flewelling. To "fin ish off the day, Tom Cullen suggested a race around the loop for the checkers, with a special handicap for Lane. The checkers were lined up, engines running; Lane had a dead engine and was also standing in front of his bike. Plus, nobody told him his plug lead had been removed. Down went the flag, off went the checkers, away and over the hills, and still Lane was kicking his bike. Then with a big grin, he looked at us riders all convulsed with laughter-, Guessing it was his lead, he replaced it, started the bike, and left like a bullet. The winner around the three mile loop by four minutes was Jane Leavitt. •
