ORA "rare" desert scrambles By Terry Rezek SOGGY DRY LAK E, CAL. , DEC. 15 Outrageously blue skies an d air crisp as a froz en cra cker mad e the desert a line place to be thi s weekend and racin g was the thing to be doing. Saturd ay ORA invit ed its to p 50 rid ers to battle for a massive silver eup and Kevin. Hasten beat out I\lar k Ad en t for the hono rs . Sundav all o f the o ther riders h ad th eir sho t at th e same course used b y the Silver Cup racers, a type of co urse that D R A calls a "Rar e Desert Scrambles ." It was a two -loop course with loop one b eing 14 mi les lo ng and loop two o nly 9 mi les. Every body did th e first lo op once and th e seco nd two, three, or fo ur t im es d ep en d ing o n class. The st ar t headed no rth th rough th e mountains . Th e first five: mil es wer e mostly flat drainage basin and very fa st riding. The 250 Juniors and In term ed ia tes saw Craig Bontly an d his So sna Mo t ors CZ run away with th e o vera ll win. Bu t hehind Bontly was a lo t of racin g, di cin g. and battling. Mike Sol e (H us) was tryi ng very hard to keep Lou Duplessis behind h im , but the Honda rid er jus t couldn't help but stay close t o Mike. J im Hanley (CZ) and Ken Mar ti n (Ho n) t ook o ver second and th ird spo ts when Mi ke fell o ver an d Lou bro ke another pa ir of shocks; since Lou sells Bud weiser he ca n affo rd th em , Mike J enn ings and h is Elsinore gassed it fo r an Intermed iat e win in th e 125 class, Dave Maas (Ilon) an d Dave Urq uhart (DG Eng) d ic ed it o u t fo r second an d third. Wh ile all this was going on , the Juniors we re changing po sitions all over th e place, m ainly d ue to the fact that th ere are so many of th em. Sh ane Smi th (Kaw) an d George Sp eck (Hon) had a h ead-to-h ead battle for firs t. DEC. 15 Searching for a piston circli p in the wee hours of the night ma y seem a tad strange, b ut not if you wan t to rac e with Bett v Lasker and her crew at AMC' on th e Carlsbad course, espec ially wh en it's your last chance to befo re th e year ends. Arghhh! It sure was hard to find that little bugger, but I did, under the old knobbies, sitting next to a stack of Cycle News p apers, wh ich was on top of a box of DT-2 stuff. In the first 500 Pro moto, Jeff S z e ub er on a Takahasi Yamaha Monoshocker led th e way fr om the start, Scott Mo ntgo mery o f Alba Bult aco grabbed a second after a poor st ar t . Jeff Browning and Scott Cavness dueled fo r third spot, with Browning st icking his front wheel far ah ead eno ugh for the third pl acing. Th e next m oto saw J eff Browni ng o f Coast Moto Cyel e getting the holesho t, only to be passed by Cavness and Montgomery o n th e d o wnh ill o n th e second lap. Mon tgomer y d id the sa me th ing aga in to th e AAA Bultaco rid er o n the d ownhill on th e very next lap. From th er e Montgom ery built up a big lead and hel d it for th e top p lacin g and a big piece o f th at 500 guaran tee d purse. Szeuber , workin g his way up fro m a bad st art, too k second , with Cavness gra b bing a third . The 25 0 and 125 Pros ra n in th e same mo to wi th a split start . Terry Hugue1ey pull ed the strinz on the rest of th e ga ng at th e sta r t, only to he passed by eventual OA winner Rich Franklin. While Rich was gass ing his Yamah a in first with Terry with h is Bul in second , Dale Luedtke, Ch uc k Ro use and Brian Barrgher wer e pl ayin g t o uch and go with eac h o ther . While this was going on, Terry T urne r of the Carlsbad Raceway Team grabbed the hole posit ion in the 12 5 portion of the moto . With in th e time of tw o .rnin u tes, Ron Turn er too k the le ad aw ay from Terry , but Terry sta yed within in ches of the fast Honda. Scott Clifton and Mik e J ohnson h ad their D&G Hondas running in third and fourth. Bac k now to the 250s. Th e three Yamaha riders were still playing "tug-of-war " for third, but it was Chuck Rouse who happened t o be in third when th e ch eckered fe ll, Lu ed tk e fin ish ed a sane fourth. Rich Fr anklin had already pitted with a first in hi s grasp , T erry Hugu cley t o o k a second . Ro n Turner w as still in firs t, an d st ill just inches ah ead o f T erry . Terry 's gogg les go t too sp lattered with mud. so he h ad to pull th em o ff , losin g precious time and getting off h is fast pa ce o f j ust un der I :50. Ron finis hed first, Terry second , and Clifton third, The second o f th e 25 0- 125 Pro moto s saw Yamaha mo un te d Brian Barrgh er get the jump out of th e ga te with T erry Ilugueley close behind. Rich Fran klin began third , but quickly fo und him sel f in rust, ru nning away with the wh ole affair. Hu guel ey stayed in a so und se cond , wh ile Barrgh er fe ll back to dice out with Rouse and Lued tke. The 125 Pros took o ff from th e ga t e ....ith T im Buck leadin g the way. Terry T urner fell down in the firs t co mer and lost a chanc e a t th e overall . Ron Turner q uickly took the lead away from Buck, wh o fell back behind Scott Clift on and Mik e Johnson. Terry Turner go t back up , pretty far back, he kep t his throttle stuc k wide o p en and st eadily made his way through to th e back fe nde r o f Mike J ohnson. By this t ime, Rich Fran klin . was way ah ead and assured o f a go od piece o f th e first p lac e cash . Terry Hugueley cru ised in se co nd w ith Ch uc k Ro use not too far beh ind.
