Ren o 's H. L. Custer mad e his last stand for third on both the TT and half-mile, slightly underpowered on his 350 Honda. Craig Armstrong ac ed Albert Ren z for first TT 250 Am ateur but too k a ba ck saddle to Yamaha-mounted Jim Nosek on half-mile. Albert do mina ted the Expert and Amateur clas ses o n his three Yarnahas, taking trophies in th e 125 Amateur and 500 Am at eur ac tio n. Another Am at e ur , T erry Wyrembeck, was a double threa t to th e Ex perts, taking first on the hal f-mil e and sec o nd in IT with h ot and heavy competition. Once past the firs t jump, the y twisted and tu rned a nd made it over th e top. In hillclimbing a rider is allowed to en ter as m an y classes as he likes. Once he jumps clas s h e m ust, however, enter th e high er modified class, even if his bi ke is st o ck. This acc o un ts for the fact th a t th e same pe rson may appear as a winner in se veral classes. So me riders b rin g mo re th an o ne bike to the meet, thus putting 360 STOCK: 1. During the second round of co m pe t itio n Doug Hall , on a highly modified 25 0 Bultaco, be came the smallest bike to make it over th e top. As usu al , so me of the most exci ting races were in the 750 to Open class. One after ano ther th e big bikes to p ped the hill. The st arting lin e was moved hi gher after ea ch round o f co mp et it io n . Fin all y th e startin g block was set a t 320 fee t. Thirteen riders were st ill in co n te n tio n. It seemed th at it w ould be im possib le to even get a bike started fro m this poin t. Shaver was first on the line. His powerfu l Triu m ph go t off with a roar as he ba ttled upward to an amazing 380 feet . Then ca me Mac kel and his T riumph. He in ch ed u pw ard an d ca me to a grinding ha lt a t 3 82 feet. j us t enough to take th e win an d first place in his class. Enterprises Yamaha twi n to an easy victory over a very fin e field of riders in the 250 Expert hal f-m ile ma in even t. Murray, whose high poi nt of th e season was finis hing second at the Stockton Mile National, grabbed the lea d in th e seco nd t um of the opening "lap , and never gave the rest o f the field a chanc e. St eve Fortune, one of the top Experts in t h e 250 class a t Corona, held off Murray in th e heat race to ta ke the vict ory , but Fortune su ffered a poor start in th e feature, and had to work his way through th e pack . Fost er la ter cap tured the Open Expert sh o rt tr ack feature o ver John Allison (35 0 Kaw }, Eddie Lawson rode a 125 Yam aha from Yamaha of Montclair to vic tory in the 25 0 Expe rt sh o rt tr ack main , as h e defeated Doug Davenport, aboar d a Shell Motors Yamaha, and Rick Shook. In th e 125 Experts , Corona Raceway saw th e return of 13-year -old Wayne Rain ey. as the Ho nd a rider captured both the half-mile and short track main even ts.
